Iāve been part of enough rescues over the years that this has started to weigh on me. Iāve seen the full spectrum out there, simple bad luck, changing conditions, fatigue, and yes, sometimes poor judgment. But even then, Iāve never cursed anyone for needing help, and Iāve never felt the urge to put them through a trial by social media.
I cherish the freedom we have in America to explore public lands. Itās rare, itās precious, and I want that freedom for everyone, not just to access these places, but to be free of judgment while learning how to move through them safely.
Risk is relative. A route that feels āeasyā to one person can be overwhelming to another, and many people have incredible abilities to manage and minimize risk. We all start somewhere.
Without this freedom, without people getting outside, so many of the experiences and images I love to share wouldnāt even exist. Letās lead with empathy, education, and gratitude when things go wrong.

Didnāt plan on this being part of my storyā¦ but here we are.
Back in 2022 I snapped my femoral neck racing in Brian Head, UT and went through ORIF (bolting my femoral neck with a plate and screws back together), and now in 2026 longer term complications with it turned into a full hip.
The surgery took five hours just to get the old hardware out and new hip inā the benefit and downfall of being healthy, my body didnāt want to let it go. What might look like a quick turnaround over the last 4 weeks really isnāt; itās years of building a high baseline and sticking to the same mindset I use in training. The challenge of healing is no different than chasing performance, turn the volume up slow and steady, no big spikes, just consistent work. Iāve been pretty quiet through all of this, but if youāve been wondering why Iāve just been doing small Zwift and e-bike miles and no mountain bikeā¦ thatās coming soon.
No trail building yet, just scouting the trail again with easy hikes. Slowly back to all the physical things like morning rides, trail work and finishing days with sunset rides or hikes.
Grateful for all the support from friends and for the technology that makes this kind of comeback possible. Not exactly the area of life I was looking to upgrade but Iāll take itā¦ Iād rather stick to upgrades on the bike, the Subie, the truck or the house.
In the end stoked and having fun with trying to bolster the recovery. Maybe dabbling with the edge but I guess thatās what I do in most cases. Also happy to not be on NSAIDs constantly!!! The last few months were rough.

From rock armoring to drainage cleanup to dialing in those notoriously spicy sections on Tea Cup ā today made a difference. The trail is still a challenge, still a blast ā just more sustainable and ready for winter traffic.
š§ļø A little moisture + a lot of elbow grease = Mother Nature doing the final buff job for us.
Sedona trails donāt get better unless we make them better ā and today we did.

This section of Hardline Trail doesnāt get as much media love as the gulley, but it holds so much blood, sweat, and teamwork. Everyone had their hands on this one, and the @red_rock_trail_crew crew went absolutely hard in here. Itās short, but it made the whole line possible and is such an amazing control point.
