🔎 It's Time for Object of the Month!
Our latest Welsh Treasures display has taken pride of place in the dining room and is ready for inspection! Make sure to stop by for a look on your next visit.
At first glance, this may seem like simply a peculiar scrap of insignificant wood but much like everything else in the Bute collection, there is a fascinating
story behind it...
Deep beneath the mud of Cardiff in 1838, workers excavating the West Bute Dock struck something ancient. 33 feet below the clay, resting on a bed of gravel, lay a forgotten forest of oak trees!
This humble piece of wood is a fragment of one of those trees, unearthed from the very site that would transform Cardiff from a small fishing town into one of the most important trading posts in Europe.
While the 2nd Marquess of Bute, known as the "Creator of Modern Cardiff" was focused on the city’s industrial future, this oak was a quiet reminder of its prehistoric past!

In the early 1770s the 3rd Earl of Bute travelled around Italy, spending time in Venice, connecting with the city and its art. This portrait of Doge Franceso Donà by Titian is one of the works the Earl brought back to add to his stunning picture collection.
Titian is generally regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Venetian Renaissance; he painted portraits, mythological and Biblical subjects and landscapes with versatility and virtuosity. He had many patrons and was responsible for painting the portrait of each new doge, the elected leader of the Republic of Venice. In this portrait of Francesco Donà, who ruled 1545-1553, the Doge’s Palace in Saint Mark’s Square can be seen over his shoulder.
Our Contemporary Visual Arts team are following in the 3rd Earl’s footsteps, heading to Venice for the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in May for the opening of Shame Parade by Bugarin + Castle, curated by Mount Stuart Trust for Scotland + Venice.
