Sleigh Tracks, a charity Pavement/David Berman covers EP is out on Bandcamp now. Featuring @sneakpastdemons covering 'Greenlander', @mount_pelier doing 'Snow is Falling in Manhattan' & a Sneak Past Demon's original, 'It was (Christmas) Morning'. We, Classic Hiss (aka Clíona, Colin Oisín & Simon) decided it would be nice to say thanks to anyone who supported the project, and do a few bonus covers, & one original, and give them away for free on Bandcamp. We recorded them all in about a day, except for the guts of 'It was (Christmas) Morning', which were done in Ailfionn, we added new lyrics & vocals, the obligatory sleigh bells in the shed in Kimmage, with backing vocals, tin whistle & fiddle coming in via an iPad recording from Cork on Christmas eve, so it's a little rough around the edges, and it was an all nighter mixing them. The original, non-Christmasified version of 'It Was Morning' will be out later next year. But we reached the goal of having them out on Christmas morning. Please go get yourself a copy! Also, volume 2 of the Pavement/Silver Jews covers will be out in January. We can't wait for it to be out, some absolute bangers & beautiful tunes in equal measure on it. Thanks to all who contributed (you know who you are!) Link in the bio.

Actually, finally, doing new songs & other bits to go with it. One's for volume 2 of the Pavement/Silver Jews covers album in aid of Gaza. The others my own take on a very old poem.

Learning lots on the School of Song course, like recording with no headphones, embracing audio spill & the importance of good lighting. Here's my 2nd homework assignment from this course. A bit rushed to get it done in time, but I'm pretty happy with it. I wanted a kind of lo-fi, up-lifting sound. My version of the 2 songs borrow heavily from the versions of both songs on the Swiss Army Man soundtrack. It's a life-affirming film about a flatulent corpse played by Daniel Radcliffe. You should watch it. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #schoolofsong #singersongwriter #cottoneyejoe

This is my second homework assignment from Brian Eno's course with the School of Song. The instructions were to use a non-4/4 time signature, use a bunch of random sentences from a Spanish for beginners book chosen by Brian and to use only 2 chords and flip a coin to decide on what chord happens next. I mostly stuck to the brief, but ditched the coin-flip chords as it wasn't working for me. What I did do, though, was employ the bell peal system from church bells to randomise the syllables in of all the words in the lines given. I also made a bed of harmonies to make the chords with my voice in the backing vocals, but sort of half randomised them & reversed the vocals. Finally, I sang the nonsense words made-up of scrambled syllables over the top & stuck with 12 bar blues style chords on it...and here it is. 24 Bar Blues. The video is something I filmed in Riga with clips from The Rise & Fall of Western Civilisation Part 1stuck over the top for no particular reason. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #brianeno #schoolofsong #experimentalmusic #songwriting

Following on from the reel before, here's the demo I made for my second homework assignment on the @school_of_song course taught by @brianeno I chose the landscape of Mount Jerome Cemetery to write about, and this is what I made. Filmed the video walking around Mount Jerome a few weeks ago. But it was snowing the day I was there to work on my assignment which inspired the chorus lyrics - 'Bodies turn to smoke, Bind with snow, Above below' . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #demo #singersongwriter #irishmusic

I just did a four week course with the @school_of_song taught by @brianeno which was so, so good & inspiring and it got me focused & to challenge myself with getting music done while working in ways I haven't worked before. I wrote 3 pieces in total from 3 homework assignments. This is my 2nd homework - to write a piece inspired by a 'scape'. I chose Mount Jerome Cemetery in Harold's Cross. It's my favourite place to walk near my house. It's quiet, filled with history & stories, & you can see so many parts of Dublin from different vantage points in the cemetary. As cemeteries go, it's really up there with the best. 10/10. Anyway, hopefully I will get around to refining this song a bit & making a proper recording. I'll post my homework demo in another reel.✌️ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #schoolofsong #brianeno #songwriting #irishmusic

Working out a new track in practice. It varies betweeb 4/4, 6/8, 5/8 & 7/8. It'll take a lot more practice for me to be able to sing AND play at the same time...and then manage to play in time with the band. #irishmusicparty #newirishmusic #indiemusic #bandpractice

Video made on the train home to Dublin on New Year's Eve. I sent my good friend @saltingsmusic a little sketch of an idea I had on written on guitar & he graciously played it on piano for me & sent me the phone recording while I was on my way home, so I made a quick little audio montage & video using the sounds from the train, the piano recording & my original recording. The video is stuff I recorded in the RHA earlier in the year, all edited on my phone on the Cork to Dublin train. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #mountpelier #audiosketch #piano #demo #irishmusicparty

New song, well, part of a song, messing around with unusual time signatures. It's surprisingly hard to play a harmonica in 5/8 time, or whatever this is. Also messing around with video ideas, this is a first test of animating images from a 1921 ice-skating instructional book called 'Skating with Bror Meyer'. The drawings in the book are really beautiful & presented as frames of movement, so I put some of them in sequence to make the pictures come alive.
