Noel Meek @noel_meek_artist has written an essay, "Moth Quartet: Spectres of Whenua" about our album Tundra. Thoughtful words about what it is to evoke landscape in this way. He also puts this aspect of Tundra in conversation with some other really awesome artists who deal with similar questions.

Our album Tundra is coming out on 12 December. @kell.sunshine has done this design for us using a photo Rodney Vaughan (Elliotās dad!) took in Lapland in the early 80s. In an imagined expanse, itās a fixation on the details. Macro and micro awe. The horizon, what you can run your finger over, and nothing in between.
Stay tuned for an announcement about the release. We canāt wait to share the music with you.
The @mothquartet feature in this snippet of their collectively-improvised work āCampfireā. Filmed at @pyramid_club_aotearoa in October 2024, āCampfireā features Tristan Carter (violin), Salina Fisher (violin), Elliot Vaughan (viola), and Nicholas Denton Protsack (cello).
Audio recorded by Thomas Lambert and mixed/mastered by Elliot Vaughan.
Filmed by Chris Watson for SOUNZ.
Film funded by @nz_on_air
Today we are proud to release Scree Scrub Mountain Sky!
Moth Quartet's first album is out now. You can buy it via Bandcamp, or stream it on any platform.
---
We composed Scree Scrub Mountain Sky in the rugged landscapes of Tongariro National Park on New Zealandās North Island, immersing ourselves directly in the natural environment, where we listened and collectively responded to the water, trees, land and weather, bringing these ideas back to a makeshift recording studio at night. The album's title serves as a portal into this reactive style of compositionāone that aims to transport you directly into the heart of the mountains, rivers, forests, and even skies of Tongariro. The result is a transportive journey, where unbridled creativity transfigures itself into the raw beauty of the New Zealand wilderness.
