South Sea Spray round 7 🩷 Te Anau.
Every year that I’m lucky to return to this event feels more and more like walking through the front door of home. We had our wee battles with looming weather and super cold temps(!) but the SSS team was wrapped around us as always with the smiles, the kai, the support, the laughs. And what a treat to sneak out to Piopiotahi (Milford) for a day due to rain.
Te Anau felt full of joy, and it feels good leaving this new mural perched on the road to Milford. These three adventurers are on their way to explore the stunning natural environment of Fiordland, using hand-made animal masks to channel connection, and invite human travellers and tourists to see the world through the eyes of our precious animal companions. The Kea, Hapuka and Tawaki are all species found in this special area of the world, and I chose to use the location of this site, just out of Te Anau town, as a road side reminder to move with respect and reciprocity out there in the wild.

Mangawhai 🌞🌞🌞 Long hot(!) days in beautiful northland with my homegirl Pipi, painting this 60sqm scene on freshly dolled up Wood street. Thanks to Shay for being such a rad client and allowing me to have fun with the brief, and to the friendly locals who didn’t hesitate to share their joy in seeing a chunky new piece of art in their town.
And (last pics👉🏾) thanks to my best-girl Pipi for joining me on a mural mission. She was an absolute star and it feels huge to finally connect my two worlds of travelling artist + dog mama.

The Three Sisters. My finished piece for @southseaspray 2024.
Some of you will know about the three sisters - an age-old indigenous planting technique from the Americas where corn, beans and squash are planted together and grow together in a symbiotic relationship. They support each other, they help each other grow. The beans give nitrogen to the soil, the squash provides shaded ground cover to retain moisture, the corn provides a frame for the beans to climb. It’s harmony. It’s simple, and it’s perfect. And as if that’s not enough, at the end of it all they provide food for us humans. You see what I’m saying?

Hey - can we just take a quick look back at February? A spark that started with boss-bitch @selinafly getting curious about my curation of Sea Walls Tairāwhiti, and a few years later Sea Signals Ōtautahi was born.
This festival felt like such a success - stellar lineup, super tight operations, beautiful crew. Artists collaborating with scientists to convey urgent messages from the deep. Seriously, using art to communicate science is where it’s at.

BOOMBOX. I don’t have any good photos of the Boombox, cos I smashed my phone on the way to the festival, and also cos festival 🫠
The brainchild of @leo_mufasa_basschakra with artistic direction and production by me and some willing assistants, The Boombox provided a place to party like its 1990 for 7 days back in January.
During the day we served up K-bars, cookietimes and other such nutrient-free 90’s cafeteria delights, and during the night we partied. Swipe across for Leo serving up crushing bass, plus the original vector design and some WIP’s.
