either solar or lunar
date: summer 2025
location: on the coast by the Sutro Baths and the Wave Organ in San Francisco, CA
camera: Kenko DVC589 & retrosnap minicamera
‘either solar / or lunar’ is a spectral short film that follows a natal presence of light seen from the point of view of a lone visitor. the clips of the sea, the frame seen in view, and light are contrasted with the point of view an observer of the lone visitor fumbling lace with her hands as she waits for something unknown. long pauses between sound clips of blown out waves heard from the sea are designed to highlight the audience’s heartbeat heard inside of their ears if listening with headphones – a decision made in the middle of assemblage of footage after noticing the beat of my heart determining the space between silence and each clip, like a heartbeat-driven metronome.

**about the work**
“clara’s annunciation at sea” contemplates a message sent to her to announce her fate along waves, crashing and washing over the cloth she wears.
**process**
3D printed frame, hand sculpted and 3D photogrammetry of lilies and tuberose on my kitchen table. I brought the frame to two different locations in sf:
-sutro baths: ruins of an old bathhouse off the coast of sf
-wave organ: a sculpture and park at the north of the peninsula where the waves push air through contrete pipes, invoking a resonant sound of the waves when you put your ear to it
much like when you find an object in a video game world, when you place the back of your phone to the drawing, a link to clara, the main subject of the work, and her lore projects from the frame into your device.
the drawing is graphite on paper from an image of her in digital. and the video was taken with an old Japanese camera.
the video is deceiving and completely unaltered footage. the glow is purely from the camera’s wear and tear. included hd pictures. it was just a white piece of printer paper inside :p
you can see the secret site that you could have found during the night here: /relics/clara.html
big thanks to @higher.powerr <3 and all of the amazing artists from around the world who shared their work last night
next iteration of this work will be shown at the end of the month as a 3 min short film. stay tuned

"The algae clings to to the cloth around her feet. It is a gauzy and thin soft cotton cloth. Although it is sheer, it is layered enough to not allow visibility underneath. It has been weathered through centuries of natural decomposition and regrowth. But if a human were to touch it, the comfort of the sensation would lead them to fall to the ground and cling to the fabric and cry. Though for what reason is unknown, relief or despair."
"She counts every seagull who catches a fish. Every sand crab that finds a seashell. Every oyster that births a pearl. Every seaweed’s ray of light underwater. Despite the scraping of the rocky boulder that is underneath her, encrusted with slippery algae, there is firm grip. Falling upright."
Character design was thoughtfully crafted in Unreal Engine in collaboration with @mithril__id.447 This is a continued work in progress and the next steps include 3D character rigging and motion capture tests, with a dance variation to Angel of Cycles, a song that reminisces the high screams of a distant Hildegard of Bingen, Angel of Cycles, by @par.ish_ .
This research and development was completed in tandem and under the guidance of @delta.ark at the World Engines Lab at @grayareaorg .
