Welcome to Structurally Speaking — a new series from Moses Structural Engineers.
This series is designed to make complex building topics more accessible, practical, and easier to engage with. From mass timber and hybrid systems to prefab, modular, net-zero, code, and constructability, we’ll be sharing clear insights that help explain how modern buildings come together.
Our goal is to contribute useful knowledge, spark better conversations, and support a stronger understanding of the ideas shaping the future of building. Across the industry and for those entering it.
Follow along as we explore the systems, strategies, and thinking reshaping how buildings get built.

Structurally speaking… tall wood buildings need more than ambition. They need a clear path to approval.
With MSE partners David Moses and Mary Alexander among the co-authors, this guide reflects the kind of practical, evidence-based thinking needed to move tall wood and hybrid construction forward.

Safety is built long before construction begins.
On World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we recognize the importance of a strong safety culture across design, engineering, fabrication, site visits, and construction.
Thoughtful design, coordination, planning, communication, and the proper use of safety gear all play a role in creating safer outcomes across the built environment.

Congratulations to our client @sean.homes on winning the City of Barrie Mayor’s Innovation Award for Research & Innovation Contribution for Rainwater.
We’re proud to have worked together on a project that reflects bold thinking in sustainable development, including mass timber, geothermal, and a fresh approach to community-building.
A well-deserved recognition for an innovative project and team. Congratulations to Sean Mason and everyone involved.

Today is Earth Day, and it’s a good reminder that reducing a building’s climate impact means looking at the full picture.
In this edition of Structurally Speaking, we break down the difference between embodied, operational, and biogenic carbon — and why understanding all three matters when designing for better outcomes.
At MSE, we believe better building starts with better decisions.

A Toronto first.
This Queen Street East development was part of Ontario’s first series of six-storey, all-CLT prefabricated mass timber mid-rise buildings. And we’re proud to have helped make it possible.
This project required alternative solutions for mass timber stair and elevator cores and a system built for a tight urban site: lighter on poor soils, faster to build, and with minimal disruption
Working with the @cityplanto , R-Hauz Solutions , @cmv_group_architects , Timber Systems Markham, and @buttconlimited .

Prefab isn’t one thing.
From modular to panelized to kit-of-parts, each approach comes with different strengths, tradeoffs, and coordination needs.

Our own Shanuja Nagarathinam will be speaking at Women in Construction 2026 this Thursday, April 9, in Mississauga.
Hosted by Rock to Road, the event brings together women across construction and trades for important conversations around progress, advocacy, and the work still ahead.
We’re proud to see Shanuja representing Moses Structural Engineers in this industry discussion.

Completed in 2021, the @uofguelph Turfgrass Institute is a two-storey academic building that brings together classrooms, offices, laboratories, and multi-use learning and research spaces. Its hybrid structural system combines mass timber, steel, concrete, and masonry. Sustainable features such as green roofs, large glazed walls for daylighting, and rainwater harvesting support a high-performance learning environment.
