As the dark & cold of another U.K winter approaches & another endless horrific war invades our daily reality my mind wanders back to the beautiful 3 months I had in Australia this year… A time to really connect with the Aussie side of my family I never got to grow up with, & this time I was honoured to be given a nice big 7ft x 30ft wall to paint 🎨 ( thanks Norma ) … smooth concrete panels erected by @modularwalls in my aunts back garden provided a totally smooth & stable canvas to paint this ‘BIRD DREAMING’ piece on that features all the bird life ( & midnight possums ) she sees on a daily basis.

Brisbane really made me feel at home this time… AKA Meanjinn as indigenous people call it. I always loved the music of Yothu Yindi from Northern Territory so was really pleased to discover family connections with them.. what a small world it is ..

A colourful throwback to spring / summer I spent in Australia this year of 2023… painting this mural most days in the subtropical paradise of Brisbane, escaping the cold winter spring snow & rain of March, April / May in U.K to make art in the sun. It’s baking hot down under in those months, so was I jumping in the pool fully clothed to cool off and de-dustily when covered in paint specks from creating this garden wall art for my Aussie auntie.
These concrete panels come ready made from @modularwalls company in Oz & easily slot together in sheets about door size between uprights so you could have a 7x30ft wall built neatly & quickly like this in a day or 2. The wall building company loved this mural so much when my aunt emailed it to them they ran a nationwide feature on it 🎨 I guess it’s not often they see their product painted in such a colourful way. ( thanks again MW! )

On the plane back to the U.K. I saw an amazing film about Richard Bell , an indigenous Australian artist / activist that’s basically like the Aussie version of Banksy that started out in an Oz version of The Black Panthers. Checkout his Insta account @heshowzoff , his most famous work was a touring tent that was labelled ABORIGINAL EMBASSY that he toured around Australia highlighting the way indigenous peoples have suffered during the time their country was colonised in the last few hundred years.

With all the madness happening in the world right now it inspired me to remember back to earlier happier brighter more colourful times in the year when I was in Australia for 3 months painting 3 murals during their spring/summer. 2 public pieces I did & this one for my Aussie auntie’s back garden wall ( supplied by the excellent @modularwalls . A wonderful smooth surface to paint on they installed to her on simple / quick to erect concrete panel units).
Whilst painting this during the day all these birds visible in the artwork would be flying around , chirping and sqwarking, bush turkeys scrabbling about in the garden looking for grubs & waste fruit n veg to eat 🦃 . During the night painting sessions huge fruit bats would appear above me after dusk making weird noises from their nests in the biggest trees nearby , flapping their wings as wide as seagulls in huge groups circling above . Luckily it was only the once they pooped on me from above. Also Possums would appear eye to eye with me scrambling along the top of the fence on their midnight patrols of their territories in the area, so I added a portrait of a baby possum into this panel. Also while I was in Oz Barry Humphries who played Dame Edna died sadly. So I added some Gladioli flowers in his / her honour as Dame Edna was basically royalty down under & would always carrying them about to throw to her audience …

Such a beautiful story to hear whilst halfway thru painting 37 bollarts in Kennington for a street art project that a local couple’s son fell in love with this koala themed one so much so that he hugs it each time he passes through there with his parents.
(( It’s feedback like this that makes it all worth it spending 2x weeks sitting in the gutter & dodging buses whilst painting them haha .. ))
Since he’s of Australian heritage his dad said it would mean so much to him for me to paint it with a cute koala bear

I’d been wanting to paint a decent portrait of our friend in her bunny suit onesie for a long time & this exhibition seemed like the right moment to get it done.
Featuring “the blackest black” & the “goldest gold” paint by Stuart Semple @culturehustle 🎨 which really brought the pharoah Queen style Egyptian nemus & eclipse sections to life with depth & sparkle … ( both characteristics she had in vast abundance )
Based on a photo I took of her the day I first brought her to @voutoreenees_ to show her the murals I painted there & introduce her to this fun art club in east london after becoming friends with her in precovid times when we met at @chelseaartsclub randomly . She had such a blissful look of pure joy & innocence with such a bright light that lit up the room in this moment so I’m so glad I captured it with a few quick photos that day … this charming smile I will always remember her by .. (( plus all the art & antics lol 😆 ))
Rest in power my dear lil sis Katya … see you on the other side one day … (( I miss you x ))

‘Trinity Of Goddess Bastet’ 2026
New sculpture work now on display at The Crypt Gallery NW1 group show named ‘Down The Rabbit Hole’ morganised by Katya’s Space CIC.
I dedicate it to my recently departed dear mother Leoni & great late friend Katya Kan.
Bastet is a popular deity worshipped since the Pharaoh era of ancient Egyptian culture , her mythology encapsulates protection , fertility, female power & the spirit of the home.

This is the sculpture series I was working on when my lovely amazing beautiful & courageous mother suddenly passed very recently. She had been appreciating these carvings shortly before went to meet her maker, telling me how she thought they were great & my sculpting skills had been constantly improving . So it all has a special significance now, pyramids / cats & tombs. Since our family always had kittycats in our home since my early childhood, & her interest in ancient Egyptian mystery schools & wisdom of the pharaoh era mythos & admiration for their high level arts & crafts / architectural abilities ; some of which is hard to replicate today even with all our modern technology at ones disposal. She is also responsible for introducing me to the amazing @grahamhancock journalist / writer who is famous for thinking outside the box when it comes to researching ancient cultures.
Whilst still mourning mama matriarch Leoni’s recent passing it’s been super therapeutic to have the loving support & kindness from solid friends around me & continuing to work on these pieces giving purpose to my days instead of falling to pieces in the process.

❤️ My dear beautiful wonderful mother, suddenly is with the angels forever more now. such a truly kind, loving, patient, forgiving , creative , caring , funny & gentle, intelligent & tolerant peaceful person. Still so hard to accept the fact she’s gone to the spirit realm. Being such a stoic, brave & courageous hard working woman as she was she made little of the medical condition struggles she was going through in very recent times & then by the time it was fully disclosed & known about in the last few days / weeks it was already inoperable & too late to do anything about - which in a way she was glad about. We were doing everything we could to help her with what she wanted & thought there was a way to accomplish what she wanted to do about it but tragically reality had other ideas about that. That glimmer of light of hope was suddenly extinguished. Such a true original that bucked trends & would always rather do things her own way with her Aussie outback pioneer spirit than follow the crowd. ThankU for all your brilliance you gave everyone around you in life, you really did so much for others right up until your very last moments. Im so gutted that fate of destiny cut short the plans we had to bring you for adventures in sunny happier places in the retirement time you looked forward to but that never arrived.
