We had a great day yesterday at the Cromarty Harbour Hooley in celebration of the completion of the east mole restoration work. RNLI boats from Invergordon, North Kessock and Port of Cromarty Firth Pilot boats appeared alongside local skiff rowing groups. It was a busy harbour!

It looks like Magnus the walrus is still enjoying his visit to the Moray Firth.
Please remember to keep your distance - British Divers Marine Life Rescue are working closely with Police Scotland Wildlife Crime Team, local Policing teams and NatureScot to help monitor the situation as and when he turns up, to minimise and manage potential disturbance.
"Walruses depend on long, uninterrupted periods of rest to recover energy reserves. Repeated disturbance, whether from people approaching too closely, noise, drones etc can cause stress or force him to relocate. This uses up valuable energy, potentially impacting their ability to continue travelling, feed effectively, and ultimately survive."

I had a wonderful morning recently with Cromarty Primary P5/6&7 pupils talking to them about marine invasive non native species and citizen science. We searched for the recently found invasive slipper limpet along the Cromarty shoreline, whilst identifying other shells.
Fortrose library hosted a wonderful event woth the WDC humpback whale Hope being the big draw. It was great to represent both @morayfirth and @morayoceancommunity and be among other brilliant organisations such as @mcs_uk , @bdmlr_uk and Seawatch Foundation
We will be at this fun event with @morayoceancommunity explaining our citizen science activities

Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)are now developing Scotland’s Flood Risk Management Plans for the period 2028 to 2034, due to be published for consultation at the end of 2026. As part of the process they are consulting in two phases, with the first phase of consultation now live. This consultation will be an opportunity for the public to tell us about their flooding issues and concerns within Potentially Vulnerable Areas (PVAs), to help inform these plans. They are also seeking information on projects and initiatives that are already happening in PVAs.
You can contribute to this consultation using following link: .uk/flood-risk-management-plans/
Join us for this event on either date. We are organising this with @morayoceancommunity : Friday 30th January - Cromarty:

If you would like to help NatureScot, SAMS and Napier University further their knowledge about flapper skate (see below post), please send them any dried and beached egg cases for analysis. They would like the dried egg cases to be baged, labelled (with location, what3words or coordinates) and date when found and send to: Dr J Dodd, Operations Officer-West, NatureScot, Cameron House, Albany Street, Oban, PA344AE
or pass them to me (Terrie).
For identifying flapper skate egg cases, check: /faqs/flapper-skate.
