마이어리거 카를스루에에서는 조나단 몽크(b. 1969, 영국)의 개인전 «Into the Trees, Into the Trees»가 진행 중입니다.
1980년대 초 영국 밴드 The Cure의 ‹A Forest›에서 반복되는 ‘into the trees, into the trees’라는 구절에서 제목을 가져온 이번 전시는, 의미를 단정할 수 없는 몽환적 분위기에서 출발합니다.
전시는 이탈리아 작가 살보에 대한 몽크의 관심을 확장합니다. 그는 살보의 풍경을 재인쇄해 배경을 지우고 나무만 남기거나, 미술사적 이미지 위에 겹쳐 재구성합니다. ‹Salvo Trees X Flowers Andy›(2026) 연작에서는 살보의 풍경을 앤디 워홀의 1970년 꽃 실크스크린 위에 배치하며 재생산, 진위, 가치에 관한 질문을 이어갑니다.
또 다른 연작인 ‹If in Doubt, add a Salvo›(2025)에서는 나무를 입체 부조로 제작해 다양한 지지체 위에 더합니다. 작품은 나무의 개수에 따라 가격이 책정되며 예술과 시장의 관계를 드러냅니다. 타인의 이미지와 자신의 작업을 함께 다루며, 몽크는 창작과 반복, 파괴와 재구성의 순환을 보여줍니다. 이는 ‹A Forest›의 마지막 구절 “Again and again and again and again…”처럼 끝없이 반복되는 흐름과도 닮아 있습니다. 전시는 마이어리거 카를스루에에서 3월 28일까지.
Jonathan Monk’s (b. 1969, UK) solo exhibition 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘴, 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘴 is on view at Meyer Riegger, Karlsruhe.
Taking its title from the repeated lyric in The Cure’s early 1980s track 𝘈 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵, the exhibition unfolds within the song’s ambiguous, hallucinatory atmosphere.
The presentation extends Monk’s engagement with Italian artist Salvo. He reprints Salvo’s landscapes, erases their backgrounds to isolate the trees, or layers them over art historical images. In 𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘷𝘰 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘟 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘈𝘯𝘥𝘺 (2026) series, altered landscapes are placed over Andy Warhol’s 1970 flower screen-prints, reinforcing questions of reproduction, authenticity, and value.
In his another series, 𝘐𝘧 𝘪𝘯 𝘋𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘵, 𝘢𝘥𝘥 𝘢 𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘷𝘰 (2025), trees become three-dimensional reliefs added to varied supports. Priced by the number of trees, the works foreground the logic of the art market. Drawing on others’ images as well as his own, Monk reflects on cycles of creation and repetition, destruction and reconstruction—echoing the final line of 𝘈 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵: “Again and again and again and again…”
