Immense gratitude to Patricia Lewy and The Brooklyn Rail for the brilliant and sensitive review of "'To continue painting': James Bishop and New York" in the February issue. The show is on view at Timothy Taylor, New York, through February 28. Read the whole review online. #jamesbishop @brooklynrail @timothytaylorgallery

I was saddened to hear the news about the impending closure of Timothy Taylor Gallery in Tribeca next month. Seeing the headlines about this in the arts press certainly took me by surprise as I always thought they had some strong exhibition programming! In fact, their previous show - “‘To continue painting’: James Bishop and New York” curated by Molly Warnock - was a real tour de force in its showcase of a painter whose work really comes across as a great example of effective artistic rule-breaking. Based on my initial impressions of Bishop’s work, I was hard-pressed on calling him a Minimalist only to learn in the press release that he identified as “an Abstract Expressionist of the quieter branch.” Things suddenly became clearer as many of the prominent AbEx artists - practically across the board - can be collectively described as wielding an emotive and gestural thrust to their paintings. Bishop’s, on the other hand, retains some semblance of that sensibility but on a muted or hushed tone. The title of the show was also a wonderful encapsulation of Bishop’s artistic philosophy as it derives from his 1973 grant application for The National Endowment of the Arts. No highfalutin statements nor over-didacticism. Bishop spoke from the heart about an inner need to simply paint! Bravo to Warnock for organizing such an amazing show! To my London friends, Timothy Taylor Gallery will be maintaining operations there (they will also keep a viewing room and office here in New York)! #nycartgallery #abstractpainters #abstractpaintingartist #tribecaart #contemporaryartgallery

As "'To continue painting': James Bishop and New York" heads into its final two weeks at Timothy Taylor, New York, I'm also looking back to "Simon Hantaï: Unfolding," two years ago in the same space. Thank you @timothytaylorgallery for your trust and confidence; it has been a privilege and a joy working with you. #simonhantaï #timothytaylorgallery

Beautiful drawings by Paul Pagk in his current solo show at Miguel Abreu, through Feb. 28. I really liked seeing the drawings interspersed with the paintings. Also at the gallery is Paul's monograph with Skira, in which I'm honored to have an essay. @paulpagk @miguelabreugallery @skira_arte #paulpagk #miguelabreu #skira

Deadline approaching! The Clyfford Still Catalogue Raisonné project aims to document all artworks by Clyfford Still in order to create a comprehensive, publicly accessible record of Still’s artistic output for the advancement of Still scholarship and a holistic understanding of twentieth-century American art. The Clyfford Still Museum seeks to confirm records of known works that left Still’s collection by inviting collectors, galleries, auction houses, and other institutions to participate in our broadening awareness of Still’s artistic contributions. We invite owners of Clyfford Still artworks to complete and submit the Clyfford Still Catalogue Raisonné Object Form online. Please submit object(s) by March 31, 2026, to be considered for inclusion in Clyfford Still’s published Catalogue Raisonné (link in bio)

I love the irregular grids and subtle color of these James Bishop works (drawings? Paintings?) on paper as a part of ‘To Continue Painting’ curated by @molly.warnock at @timothytaylorgallery . “From the quieter branch of abstract expressionism”, the works on view evidence a personal interaction with touch and surface not normally found in the minimalism they might be mistaken for. #art #painting #abstractart #abstractpainting #JamesBishop

James Bishop covers for the Paris Review, Spring-Summer 1965 and Winter 1968, details. The first cover image was published under Bishop's own name, while the second was a pseudonymous work by "Emilio Theler." "'To continue painting': James Bishop and New York" remains on view at Timothy Taylor, New York, through February 28. #jamesbishop #parisreview @timothytaylorgallery #timothytaylor

What a pleasure to see the focused, beautifully curated exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Romany Eveleigh on view at Richard Saltoun, New York, through February 11. Eveleigh was one of James Bishop's dearest friends and frequently lived and worked in his Lispenard Street studio while he was in France. I've long been curious about her work and am delighted this solo show is running concurrently with "To continue painting": James Bishop and New York @timothytaylorgallery . My thanks to Charlotte Kahn (@charlottekahn ) for the illuminating walkthrough. #romanyeveleigh @richardsaltoungallery #jamesbishop
