In other horrible news Steve’s Music, a beloved part of the old Queen Street strip, is closing its doors. This was my music store from the moment I arrived in Toronto. I especially loved the picks. When the Pursuit Of Happiness was traveling the world, I would often look down at my pick, and it would remind me of Toronto. I went by the other day, just to shake hands with some of the staff who told me they could not survive the Demon from down south, who is trying to destroy our economy. I really loved this place. RIP Steve‘s you’ll definitely be missed.
The Starbucks at College and Dovercourt closed today. Before you start kicking me in the balls about Starbucks, being some evil corporate entity, which maybe it is, this closure, apparently, wasn’t due to some late stage capitalist cost-cutting short sighted thinking that will soon make it as obsolete as MTV, but because they got the boot from the landlord. I would like to thank the staff for creating a very welcoming and friendly culture here. I must admit it was one of the highlights of my day to walk in every morning. Oh well, I can now go to one of the Indie coffee stores near us and be looked at by the barista’s like I’m a stain on their Little Mermaid T-shirt.
I had a class where I needed to play the guitar. I’ve walked around with a pick in my pocket since I was about 10 years old. I got to school and realized I didn’t have one. I asked our tech office if they had any, but I didn’t like them. Then I asked my colleague; producer, songwriter, music professor David Martin, if he had one. He had this 54 40 pick so I used it six hours a day for two days. Then I had 3 1/2 days of recording sessions at EMAC with Dave Miles. I used it for the entire session. I doubt I have used one pick more than this in my life. Thanks, David.
Had the honor of performing with the legendary Carole Pope tonight at the Phoenix. Got to sing one of my all time favorite songs, Grade B Movie, with her amazing band. Carole put on an incredible show. Fun night.
