3 design rules we tend to ignore… and why it works:
“Stay neutral.”
Restraint doesn’t have to mean quiet. A single color carried with intention, or bold moments layered thoughtfully, can feel far more considered than playing it safe.
“Center everything.”
Not always. Some of the most interesting environments come from tension. A smaller moment placed intentionally in a larger space, or something more substantial grounded in a tighter setting.
“Keep it consistent.”
The most dynamic spaces aren’t built from one idea. They come from contrast. Mixing references, time periods, and textures, and letting them exist together in a way that still feels cohesive.
It’s rarely about following the rules.
It’s about knowing when to shift them.
