I was never a good thief, as I didn’t start young enough, couldn’t work out the blind spots, how to hide things on myself, and how to smoothly talk my way out when I DID get caught. I remember early December 1986, with
@zighix and
@diseydeesign , racking from a 7Eleven, as we had NO money and NO food; and on my way out past the cashier, what I had in my jacket began slipping out.
.
However, back then in Stockholm you could just scare the shit out of them and step….
.
Racking has always been an integral part of the culture though, and it taught many how to extend the practice to other stores and items, particularly the expensive and sought-after ones, which helped writers to have their parallel income.
.
I remember
@inkaone_cmd_tck racking the box of 72 Copic markers, back in Heidelberg in 94 or so, from which I made the Alte Schule and Klasse von 95 record covers! I have other friends who were heavy into expensive Italian clothing! Anyway...
.
When he was already over at
@galerienicolasxavier , rectifying the sketches I had made of his characters with nail polish,
@andresaraiva was explaining to us how he ended up using a lot of pink, because not a lot of writers racked and used that colour back then. He spoke like a seasoned veteran...
.
There are possibly as many crazy racking stories as there are painting stories, but I learned out of respect for them to be as economic as possible with paint; not emptying air out, or using fancy nozzles that would have WAY more paint ending up on the floor than on the surface in front of you.
.
In “La Folle Journée de Mr. A.”, I felt that it was important to celebrate a part of the culture that is or was the necessary routine for the vast majority of writers; as without this culture, I don’t think that so many of us would have met in life... Incredible, to think of it.
