Sneak peek behind the scenes of our Rummer photoshoot. This midcentury gem has been 15 years and three phases in the making! A long-term collaboration with clients who trusted us to come back each time. We’re thrilled to finally share the completed project and even more excited to open it up for the Portland Modern Home Tour on June 6th. More photos coming soon. #rummer #midcentury #portlandmidcentury #portlandarchitecture #portlandhomes

Potty talk 🚽 Well, this is officially the weirdest press feature we’ve gotten. 😂 @dwellmagazine interviewed Matt & featured Electric Slide, one of our middle housing/infill designs, in an article discussing Portland’s middle housing bathroom bonanza. Our take: “Sometimes they try to check boxes based on what the real estate market is perceiving people want, when they may not actually want that. If I’m only allowed 800, 900, or even 1,000 square feet, I would sacrifice that third bathroom in a heartbeat for more storage.” —Matt Daby Read the full article in bio! #dwell #dwellmagazine #PDXHomes #portlandhomes #PortlandArchitecture

Wavy white tile with deep red grout expresses the smile motif with a bit more graphic energy in the kids’ bath—more playful punch than the subtle curves elsewhere in Happy House. The tile pattern brings movement and personality to the everyday rituals of bath time. Playful doesn’t have to mean loud or chaotic—it just needs to feel joyful. And in a bathroom inspired by 90s pizza parlors, joy is exactly what we were after. Design: Us! @modabydesign 📷: @themorrisonsphoto #kidsbathroom #portlandinteriordesign #bathroom #portland #redgrout

Cottage light well study. The close proximity of the buildings in our denser cottage cluster projects has us looking for ways to pull natural light into the core of the plan. A two story space with skylights maintains privacy to the neighbors while introducing daylight and views of the sky.

Mid-renovation, a leak forced the Happy House kids’ bathroom from a future phase into the present—and with it came a tight budget and a creative opportunity. We saved the green marble counter, refaced the existing cabinetry, and laid down affordable marmoleum in a bold red-and-white checkerboard that channels pure 90s pizza parlor nostalgia. The clients—youthful, playful, children of the 80s—embraced the cheeky energy wholeheartedly. Affectionately dubbed the “90s pizza parlor bathroom,” this space became an unexpected highlight of Happy House: proof that constraints can spark the kind of avant-garde whimsy that makes a home truly yours. (And yes, those toys on the counter are from dad’s collection—the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles clearly approve of the pizza parlor vibes.) 🍕 Design @modabydesign 📷 @themorrisonsphoto #tmnt #kidsbath #pizzaparlor #80skid #90skid

The Happy House primary bath opens directly to the bedroom, allowing light to flow between spaces and creating a suite that feels expansive and connected. Some might prefer separation here, but these clients embraced (& preferred) the openness—and the result is a space that breathes. Thoughtful transitions like this remind us that good design understands how people want to move through their home, not just how spaces look in isolation. The primary bathroom vanity is the cool, minimal counterpoint to the warm clay shower room just beyond. White oak cabinetry floats along the wall, paired with curved mirrors, white ball sconces, and soft curved handles that echo Happy House’s gentle design language. We chose materials that feel good to the touch and a soft palette that never competes with the morning light. Everything here is about clarity and calm—a serene space to start and end the day.
