Get to know the DJ 🎧
When did you start Dj’ing and why?
- Influenced by my parents’ and sister’s music collection, growing up in Buru (obsessed with the matatu culture), ‘10s EDM (especially watching Avicii play after he released “Levels”, and wanting to attend Tomorrowland & Ultra Music Festival), this cocktail made me aspire to be a DJ. So as every beginner, I started out experimenting with Virtual DJ in 2011 when I joined high school. Eventually I started playing at and attending EDM raves in high school such as Earthdance, 6AM, KenyaNights, BoB, Ultimate Hangout, etc. under the alias TranceNight DJ’s with my schoolmate. Went on a little hiatus cus you know, life, fast forward to 2019, I started teaching myself scratching techniques on YouTube (DJ Angelo’s tutorials) then started my professional DJ career in 2021 and things have been elevating ever since. By then, most of my friends were doing other things, then I met a fellow enthusiast, Sir M, he had just bought his DDJ 1000. We started linking up, practicing, correcting each other, uploading our skillsets on Instagram reels/TikTok, and the rest is history.
How would you describe your DJ style/sound?
- This is one of the hardest questions to answer cus I grew up listening to every genre of music you can think of. My style is taking people on a musical journey, genre-bending from House music to Rock, Dancehall, Kenyan, and my favorite, Hip Hop. You can also catch me randomly playing Techno, Drum & Bass and be shocked!
What’s your favorite genre of music to listen to?
- Hip Hop (Trap)
What’s one track that always works on the dance floor?
- There’s this “Shake it to the Max” remix by Orosa that’s been on my rotation. It blends Cassie’s “Long Way to Go” instrumental and Moliy’s, Skilli’s, & Shenseea’s acapella. It starts off with the acapella and when the beat drops, the crowd never see it coming and the reaction is always priceless!
(Huge thank you to the amazing creatives we worked with on this project )
