Dearest @metgalaofficial_ ,
On the 1st Monday in May, a house full of us Beautiful Black Women leaders, of all shades, shapes and professions gathered in our good girlfriend @kellyinenglish âs home to celebrate Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, in celebration of Black Dandyism. We put on our fur, our pearls, our jewels, our satin, our silk, our gold, our diamonds, our luxury labels, our pinstripes, our turbans and our red lips. We draped in vintage frocks from our grandmothersâ closets and labels special ordered just for the occasion.
We channeled our elders and ancestors who held their heads high and looked good doing so. We dined on caviar, charcuterie and champagne and raised our paddles in judgement and in joy to celebrate Black Dandyism and all itâs meant to Our People since 1789. It was grand. Pure joy.
For one night, we werenât the 92%, named for how we show up for others. That Monday nightâWe were a small collective of Kellyâs friends who played dress up and cheered on Black Style, Black Icons and Dandyism. We werenât Mothers, Wives or Partnersâ-we were a living room full of Happy Black Women cheering and shouting for the best of the best really fly clothes. Today we laid the matriarch of our family to rest. My grandmother is the best person Iâve ever known and I was never going to be ready to say goodbye. She was my second mother and meant the world to me. Many do noble things, but she surpassed them all.Â
My heart is broken but I know she has taken her rightful place among the angels where sheâll continue to guide me.
Grandma, thank you for everything. You were the best and I miss you so much already. I love you and will work hard to make you proud every day.
