🌎 In the non-profit world, we’re often told that professionalism looks a certain way: muted, minimal, and neutral. But who defined that standard, and who does it serve? 1️⃣ The Neutrality Trap: For many organizations, cleaning up the brand is a survival tactic to appease traditional donors. But when we default to sterile, Eurocentric design standards, we aren’t just choosing a font, we’re participating in a visual erasure of our community’s soul. 2️⃣ Real Representation vs. Stock Imagery: Real representation isn’t just about putting a “diverse” face on a flyer. It’s about the context. When we strip away the vibrant colors, the local textures, and the specific cultural symbols of our neighborhoods to look “official,” we make our communities invisible in their own stories. 3️⃣ The Risk of Being Unrecognizable: If your branding looks like a corporate firm, how does your community know you are truly of them and for them? Radical trust is built when people see their lived reality reflected back at them with dignity. 4️⃣ Design as an Act of Liberation: At Mixed Change, we believe non-profit branding should be an extension of the movement, not a sanitized version of it. It’s about honoring the history, place, and the people we serve. 5️⃣ Moving Beyond the “Safe” Choice: Your visual identity is a bridge.
