Minouk Lim Solo Exhibition 《Hyper Yellow》 Catalog Now Available🦋
The catalog for the solo exhibition 《Hyper Yellow》, held last year at Ilmin Museum of Art, has arrived. ✨ Beginning with a research trip to Japan, this project’s journey poses questions about the overlapping layers of the world we inhabit—from religion and mythology, to Asian modernity, and the weak subjectivity of the ‘tourist’.
I hope you will once again encounter the world of work that crosses genres and experiments with materials through this catalog.
The cover image for this catalog is the installation work <Garden and Field>. I hope the subtle aesthetic sensibility of ‘Paper Press’, who handled the design, is well delivered to readers. I sincerely thank everyone who provided tremendous support throughout the creation of this book. (I wish to dedicate this catalog in memory of the late Kim Min-gi and Park Sung-kwan.) Special thanks again to Baek Jisoo, Yoon Yuli, Bae Jeong-in, and the Ilmin Museum of Art curatorial team for editing and planning; and to Baek Jisook, Satoshi Ukai, and Yuki Konno for their contributions as writers and interviewers. The publication was made possible with the support and encouragement of the Arts Council Korea, Tina Kim Gallery, and curator Danji Lee, Sanghae Kwon. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to meet so many viewers and ask for your continued attention and support for the journey of Hyper Yellow!

2025 𝘉𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘯 𝘔𝘰𝘊𝘈 𝘊𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢_𝘈𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘢 explores how today’s cinema evolves into “other forms of cinema” at the intersection of media hybridity, historical legacy, and technological environments.

[MINOUK LIM - SEOUL ART WEEK 2025]
As summer swooshes by and autumn approaches, PODIUM is delighted to spotlight the dynamic presence of three Korean artists—Omyo Cho, Soyoung Chung, and Minouk Lim—who will present diverse works across Seoul during the coming art week in the Korean capital. Looking ahead, these same artists will also feature in ‘Amour Aquatique’, the gallery’s upcoming group exhibition in March 2026 during Hong Kong Arts Month. Stay tuned!
Transforming the giant screens of COEX, Seoul (@coex_official ) that are usually occupied by commercial advertisements, Minouk Lim (@minouklim ) places unfamiliar rhythms of art onto the cityscape, breaking away from the conventional style of public screens.
Titled The Eleven-Faced Traveller, the work is a reconfiguration of a segment from the artist’s three-channel video East Sea Story (2023‒2025). Through the motif of the Eleven-Headed Avalokiteśvara familiar in Northeast Asian Buddhist culture, the work questions the relationship between the city and the community. In Buddhist tradition, the Eleven-Headed Avalokiteśvara embodies compassion and awakening, each expression conveying a different emotional state. In Lim’s animation, however, the deity appears as an ordinary traveller, with flames rising from the backpack in place of a holy aureole. The traveller then embarks on an endless eastward journey, passing pseudo-traditional structures or sinking dreamily beneath water. As another face emerges from the being’s mouth, it chants the mantra that ponders how the multiple selves navigate trauma in the contemporary world.

I would like to share the news of the performance workshop I held last month on July 31 at the Gyeonggi Museum of Art auditorium. I conducted a performance workshop titled “Leveling” with 30 canes of the late Chai Eui-jin, which evolved into my “Portable Keeper series.”The directive referenced the wand and world view in the game Elden Ring.
In the workshop, 30 teachers from Gyeonggi Province, who were recruited by the April 16 Life Safety Education Center of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, participated as performers.
The stage for “Leveling” which is divided into light and darkness, was a moving one, with performers responding to questions I created, splitting into two groups, merging together, or being left alone.
The final sequence ended with the presentation of the cane and cuttlefish bone data that each performers imagined as a “weapon and spirit body.”
Once again, I would like to thank the performers for their participation in the Levelling Performance Workshop, curator Hyehyun Lee, and musician Sima Kim.

Bonjour.
Merci.🧚🏾♂️🧚🏾♂️

Hello everyone. This is Minouk Lim, the professor in charge of the 25th K-Arts Fine Arts Graduation Exhibition. We are very happy that we had a successful opening last Friday. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who showed up to the opening despite the cold weather.
I still don't know when our school's graduation exhibition became an event planned and organized by students. Our school inherited the former Central Intelligence Agency building, but the students challenged it and made alterations such as adopting accessibility policies in order to practice human rights and democratic values. This makes me believe that our graduates are not only preserving tradition, but also changing history. I would like to offer my heartfelt appreciation to all the graduates who have learned and helped each other, and nurtured the most important virtues in the tradition and history of the Fine Arts Graduation Exhibition : cherishing and compassion. And also to the teachers who mentored them. I would like to thank you all for your dedication and hard work.
This exhibition is held at the end of a very challenging year, 2024. We ask for your generous support as our graduates begin their next chapter. Once again, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the 25th Graduation Exhibition 𝘢 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢.

Hello,
In 2023, after being awarded the Obayashi Foundation's Visions of the City research grant, an archival book was published to document the project's outcomes. I am delighted to share that one volume has finally arrived in Seoul.
In 2024, I presented the exhibition “Hyper Yellow” and the performance “S.O.S.- Run Shin Shin” in Tokyo. The limitations encountered during the research process were transformed into an imagination of 'tourists' of the future and a visions of the city through the lens of the Water and Fire Festival.
The reviews for this project were written by Satoshi Ukai, author of “The Power to Respond”, a book I've relied on a lot in my search for the meaning of hospitality, and Yuki Konno, a critic who reads Korean contemporary art with the utmost care.
Over the two years of the project, I had the privilege of working with many people. My heartfelt thanks go to Heesun Seo of Studio Hik; Joyce Lam, who skillfully edited and connected Japan, Seoul, and Hong Kong; Sanghae Kwon, who coordinated everything; and Youeun Choi, the project manager; Younggyu Jang, a long-time friend who once again took on the music with generosity; Sojin Kwak, Myungwoo Jung and Hyunwook Joo, who tirelessly contributed across assistant directing, installation, and acting; Eunsol Lee, who created the Eleven-faced kannon with stunning 3D graphics; Junki Mine, who directed the filming once more following <O Tannenbaum>; Chiaki Soma and Natsuko Odate of Theater Commons; Kinugawa Tadashi of the Obayashi Foundation; Toshio Kondo of Art Tank; and many others whose names I cannot list here but whose support has been invaluable.
The <Hyper Yellow> project will also be presented at the Ilmin Museum of Art in Seoul at the end of February 2025. I would be deeply grateful for your interest and support.
Lastly, I offer my heartfelt condolences and deepest comfort to the bereaved families affected by the recent plane disaster. I sincerely pray for peace to touch everyone..

🪐Hello, I’m currently participating in a group exhibition titled <Forms of the Shadow> at the Secession in Vienna. I brought 21 acrylic paintings on military blankets that I previously exhibited in 2023 at a former U.S. military base located in the DMZ zone in South Korea. These blankets were originally used by Korean soldiers and are suspended from the ceiling, allowing both the front and back to be viewed simultaneously. On the front, dreamlike shapes and indecipherable symbols permeate the blankets, while on the back, traces of paint from the front and the names of the soldiers who once used the blankets are visible.
The paintings evoke the shadows of war while also seeking refuge from fear.
🇰🇷In South Korea, all men over the age of 18 are required to serve approximately a year and a half of military service, and these blankets are one of the standard items issued upon enlistment. However, this year, news broke that the South Korean military will replace these blankets with ones made using new material technology. May we one day live in a war-free world where we don’t need military blankets at all. 🦋

Dear friends and colleagues,
I am pleased to invite you to my solo exhibition <Memento Moiré> at the BB&M Gallery.
This exhibition features my latest work, and I would love for you to experience it!
🌓”Memento Moiré“ explores the interplay of the future through the lens of non-human perspectives. The exhibition reimagines the remnants of human civilization as coming relics, questioning the significance of myth, religion, and place in a world beyond our existence. The title is a neologism from the artist Minouk Lim. ”Moiré“ patterns represent the potential for new ground, reflecting the exhibition‘s focus on multidimensionality and visual metaphors, amorphous mandala.
Please let me know if you plan to visit. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Best, Minouk
Dear friends, I’m participating in <The Shape of Time: Korean Art after 1989> at Mia‘s exhibition until June 23. I would like to invite you to this exhibition if you visit Minneapolis. :)
In this work, I assembled objects and materials different from walking sticks, such as squid bones or wooden birds, barnacles, thorns, gourds, etc. The canes were left by Mr.Chai Eui Jin, who was one of the survivors of the civilian massacre by authority power. I received them from the bereaved family, and I’m trying to re-imagine their pre-traumatic shelter in the forest as he wanted to find so.
Thanks to Leslie Ureña💕
