Mina Piao @minapiao “Collection 0”. In “Collection 0”, Korean American designer Mina Piao treats clothing as visual reminders, garments that function like a note-to-self. This capsule collection moves beyond aesthetics, transforming familiar knitwear into objects of connection, reflection, and modular intent. Familiar sweater silhouettes are used to evoke the human form, symbolizing community, connection, and the natural world. Ten different garments connect to form a single look or separate into multiple pieces that can be shared across individuals, functioning collectively. Fully fashioned knit pants unbutton to become a hood, two sweaters link to become a cardigan, and layered knits transform into capes and skirts… Read the full article on iconiaavantgarde.com or at the link in bio. collection 0: void Fully fashioned knit pants unbutton to become a hood, two sweaters link to become a cardigan, and layered knits become capes and skirts. These knit pieces can all be worn separately as individual garments, or worn as one. Made from natural fibers - wool, silk, viscose and cotton - the knit textures were achieved through a combination of flat-bed knitting, hand knitting and crochet. Naturally dyed with walnut hulls and indigo, the textures and colors suggest both decay and resilience - referencing erosion of community and the natural world through neglect, but also the movement and life of water. All knit pieces are fully fashioned to minimize textile waste. collection 0: void Woven jacket and pants made from cotton deadstock, naturally dyed with oak galls and iron, and finished with handmade fabric buttons made from fabric waste along with vintage metal buttons - recalling the look of metal hardware on cyborgs. Lace-up closures replace zippers as a more sustainable option. Removable shields, exposed seams, adjustable ways of wearing and pintucks construct concepts of self-augmentation and self-protection, building a silhouette that feels cold, fragmented and overly engineered. Inspired by Lee Bul’s cyborg series, AI generated humanoid images, as well as the biblical stories of King Nebuchadnezzar and the Tower of Babel. Combined with the knits, they tell a story of transformation that occurs when one’s humanity is neglected in pursuit of advancement. collection 0: void The starting point for collection 0 was the idea of clothing as visual reminders - like quotes on a wall, or notes saved in a phone, I wanted to translate that same sense of intentionality into garments that act as nonverbal cues. Familiar sweaters silhouettes are used to evoke the human form, symbolizing community, connection and the natural world. Ten different garments connect together to form a single look, or separate into multiple pieces that can be shared across individuals - functioning collectively. SDC 2024: Collective Look 1 This capsule collection for @supima explores the interconnectedness of communities and our struggles, examining contrasts between safety and vulnerability. Xara wears a fully fashioned hand dyed ombre knit dress with hand dyed i-cord detail made with 100% Supima cotton yarn. Hand knit hand-dyed ombre sweater made with Supima jersey. --- Knit elements in this look are inspired by Korean artist Hong Sung Chul’s interpretation of umbilical cords as one of the first symbols of human connection in our lives.  Silhouettes are drawn from the shapes of trees, imagining society connected as one body, working together in unison as one entity, like roots sustaining a tree.  --- Special thanks to the team: @olivia_margaritas and @nacrakite for knit development, as well as @katherinexalva , @ghm1n and @jessihighetstudio --- Modeled by @xaragiulia Photos: @gettyfashion @matthewcarasella Video: @essayvideo --- #supimadesigncompetition #supimadesignlab #dazedanddiscovered #upnextdesigner
