🎨 What if art wasn’t something you just looked at—but something you entered? 👩‍🎨 Next up on INSIDE+OUT's "In the Studio With" series, we sit down with Hudson Valley artist Millicent Young @millicent.young , who creates immersive works with light, sound + salvaged materials as spaces that hold memory, grief and quiet transformation Her journey began making sense of chaos as a child in NYC. Today, that same instinct shapes installations where YOU become part of the work—your presence, your shadow, your experience 🪾🍃 Experience her installation as she steps away, it’s into the landscape—walking, listening, letting ideas arrive... 🌱 📆 May 9 Opening Reception "Holding Light Sutra." 📍 Ann Street Gallery @annstreetgallery Get the full scoop linked in B I O @insideoutupstateny and 🎥 Watch the brief movie of Millicent at work, creating "In the Studio" presented by the one and only @littlebitcreates 🖼️ Connect + Follow Millicent Young @millicent.young + + + 📸 by @millicent.young + @Pete_Mauney + @rivka_s_katvan 🎬 by Richard Hall & Mimi Young @littlebitcreates

I’m feeling the inspiration and excitement gathering around this multimodal multidisciplinary group of artists curated by the brilliant poet and performance artist Edwin Torres @brainlingo_ at @annstreetgallery .    “(your) body is a porous language : (our) embodied connections” is an exhibition ‘seeking transformative ways of relating through poetic structures’. Writes Torres, ‘The transformative process of poetry’s sense-shifting is a navigation between mind and body that art-making creates openings for. Across the many voices and forms gathered, this exhibit proposes how language-making can shape our willingness to interrogate a continually evolving world.’   My works included belong to 3 different series made over the past 10 years: the recent Inaudible series (shown in 2-4), In Silence, and Cantos for the Anthropocene. All probe meta questions about language, memory, and absence that remain alive and evolving for me. These explorations are part of my search for a language against fragmentation in a time of collapse, forms for a new mythology of being.   Opening reception Saturday April 11, 4-6 104 Ann Street Newburgh NY Through May 31

It’s lovely to see these older vine and hair works featured in print in a spread in the Dutch textiles journal Textiel Plus. All have been seen in the Hudson Valley in exhibitions by Jen Dragon at Cross Contemporary Projects, Fridman Gallery/Beacon, Jane St Art Center and Broken Wing Barn. Also at Chroma Projects in Virginia and VisArts in Maryland.   Link in bio for an English translation @TxP  @karmensamson @fridmangallery @crosscontemporaryart @janestreetart @visartscenter @chromaprojectsartgallery   #horsehair #textilesculpture #installation #millicentyoung

No Buildings Were Left Standing. Steel frame windows, plaster, earth, pigments, wood, pencil.   Made during the intense unrelenting bombardment of Gaza City when the photographs of dis-membered buildings and the topography of rubble that the Gaza Strip had become were streaming in, I wondered how to mark what could never be re-membered. #millicentyoung #womenartists #artandwar #steele

“….I returned to Truro in December. The windows of the one room shack there at the dune’s edge face west. For seven days the horizon was unbroken. Moonrise to sunrise to moonset to sunset to moonrise...For seven unbroken days under the dome of sky, I was particle in the waves of salted wind and tide. The windows of my bedroom at home in High Falls face east. For the six months when the trees are bare, I sit before the distant ridge line of ancient stone welded onto this continental landmass 299,000,000 years ago and watch the returning sun illuminate the horizon. I am at my morning altar. To attend to sunrise and horizon is to be simultaneously in the present and the eternal. To be at the incomprehensible convergence of scales of place and time. This is how I try to calibrate what I will encounter and have no words for as the day’s news arrives.” seeking language against fragmentation….. #nowar

Force Field is another series of plaster tableaux forms that emerged alongside the Inaudible series. The Force Fields begin with dry earth laid on the bottom of a rectangular mold over which I ladle wet plaster. Once out of the mold, I work the surface with a sandblaster, making marks and adding and removing pigments, sealing the surface between each layer. Leaning against the wall on a wood ledge, the Force Field tableaux are held in place by gravity.   #MillicentYoung #newwork #plaster #hudsonvalleyart #womenartists 📸pete_mauney

Another wall mounted work from the Inaudible series: Plaster, steel, ink, dry pigment, pencil.   I begin by working with ink and dry pigments on a wet plaster tableaux. Then onto the still wet plaster I lay a sheet of paper with script on it. When dry, I peel off the paper. The script is transferred to the plaster and the plaster has recorded the edges and buckling of the paper. I call to the steel back that holds the plaster tableaux as a ‘bezel’ referring the setting of a stone in jewelry making. I designed the prongs of the bezels to slide to accommodate the plaster. The patterns on the sheet steel record the flow oil during the rolling process of fabrication.   In my newsletter, I wrote about how this series and another series, Force Field, came about. The flow that they were a part of and the larger whole to which they belong that includes work in the round and a multimedia installation. As I share more images, I will fill that in or you can read the newsletter Finding Language || Mending Place (link in bio).   #MillicentYoung #newwork #plaster #hudsonvalleyart #womenartists photos:@pete_mauney

Finally, after such a long silence, I sent out a newsletter about what I’ve been up to - how for the past six months I’ve been making a language against fragmentation, a language of mending. A sensorial language because my sentences were crumbling under the weight of all that is collapsing and my words were dissolving into letters. I was ready to share some of that process as well as a project that it is culminating towards. One from a new wall mounted series ‘Inaudible’ Plaster, steel, ink, pigment, pencil. I got more response than usual to my newsletter. More unsubscribes - and some hurt - but also more letters expressing heartfelt resonance and gratitude. A threshold moment in miniature between the Year of the Snake 2025 and the Year of the Fire Horse 2026.
