Milestone Studios is extremely proud to present No Longer What (I)t Was, a solo exhibition of works painted by the New Mills Open Exhibition 2025 award winner, Rachel Craven!
In this series, Rachel translates her experience of being diagnosed and living with chronic vestibular migraine into paintings of broken spaces and buildings, structures which, like Rachel, are no longer what they were and not yet what they will become.
You are warmly invited to the preview on Friday the 1st of May, 6.30–8.30pm. Entry is free, and refreshments will be provided.
The exhibition runs from 1–16 May at Milestone Studios. Milestone Studios is open on Thursdays and Saturdays 10am-4pm.

If you ever see our signs outside on a day that isn't a Thursday or a Saturday, that means we're in, we're open, and you're welcome to visit.
So although our advertised hours are Thurs and Sat, you’ll probably spot our signs out at least one day extra each week.

Our open plan, ground floor workshop, is available from just £10ph. For day long bookings, we cap the cost at £60, so for 8 hours, you only pay for 6!
For evening hire (after 5pm) the space is £15ph.
For multi-day hire, contact us directly for rates.
Our workshop is fully equipped with tables and chairs. Hot drinks are also included in the cost.

Rachel's exhibition features a series of original acrylic paintings. No Longer What I(t) Was. Rachel's work explores her experience with chronic migraine.
"Living with chronic migraine, I feel a deep connection to things that are ‘broken’. On my journey, I've found myself re‑evaluating my purpose and place in the world. I've often felt lost.
I paint dilapidated buildings as I relate to them. These buildings can no longer serve their original purpose but still have a strong, enchanting presence about them. They've found a new purpose by giving nature life. We've both had to evolve into something new.
My acrylic paintings focus on the theme of broken but beautiful, experiences or places that bring me joy and my journey with chronic illness.”

TONIGHT: Collage Club, 7-9pm
£10 per person
Collage club is a relaxed, social evening of cut and stick, offering a playful space to get started with collage. Each month, we have a theme or creative exercise to offer inspiration. Everyone welcome, no experience necessary! All materials are provided, and refreshments are included.
Printmaking Taster: Experimental Monoprint
Saturday 30th May 10:00am - 12:30pm
£40per person, £60 for two when booked together.
During this 2.5 hour workshop you will explore various monoprint techniques, with support from printmaker Charlie Collins. Charlie will demonstrate additive, reductive and trace monoprinting, and guide you through creating your own prints using each technique. You will learn how to use our A2 Gunning Etching Press during the session.
Choose Love and Unity - Open Call

This open call invites LGBTQIA+ artists and makers to submit work to Choose Love & Unity, an exhibition at Milestone Studios and Gallery taking place alongside @pridenewmills 2026.

Milestone Studios and Gallery will be open from Saturday the 23rd of May to Monday the 25th May for The High Peak Open Studios! High Peak Open Studios is a free weekend event where artists and makers across the Peak District open their studio doors to the public. There are over 100 artists exhibiting across 36 different venues.

Rachel's solo exhibition, No Longer What I(t) Was is on display at the studio until the 16th of May. We open Thursdays and Saturdays, from 10am till 4pm, if you haven't yet seen the exhibition.
If you do visit this week and spot some scaffolding up around the building, please don't be deterred, we are open as normal, and you're welcome to wonder in!

This piece, 'Forgotten', is part of a series of original works currently on display at Milestone, exploring Rachel's lived experience of chronic vestibular migraine.
Rachel's paintings find beauty in the overlooked, the falling apart, the determination of these broken spaces. They are no longer what they were, but not yet what they will become.
If you'd like to see Rachel's incredible work, the exhibition is still on display until the 16th of May, and we are open today, 10am till 4pm.
Rachel will also be joining us today for a live painting demonstration on the gallery from 12pm.

About the artist:
Charlie is an artist, creative producer and researcher, practising gently and working collaboratively on artistic ideas, projects and programmes across the UK. Her visual work is informed by an interest in dialogue and tacit knowledge and is often realised through painting and printmaking.
About the venue:
Milestone Studios and Gallery is in the heart of New Mills. Four artists share the studio space upstairs, and the downstairs space boasts a changing programme of exhibitions & workshops. There is also a shop space featuring work by many local artists as well as art supplies.
