Happy release day to @mileshew — “Living the Dream” / “Art & Life” is out now via Bandcamp and all streaming platforms. “Living the Dream” is a roiling rollick through the End Times. Grinning ruefully from within the crumbling empire and backed by a crack team of Brooklyn session players, Hewitt conjures an American wasteland of microplastic wildfires, cowboy-prophets, and even Francis Fukuyama, the political scientist who infamously predicted “the end of history” as a 21st century of uninterrupted democratic stability and liberal norms (nice thought though!). Here we join “Frank,” sipping beers, passing the vape, and watching as the “void yawned wide and the stars fell in” — still, he assures us, “the good part’s starting now.” The nightmare continues on “Art & Life,” a wry meditation on the impossibilities of big-city bohemia in 2024 — “Hard Times in New York Town” for the iPhone generation. “At least out on the West Coast, they’ll smile as they kill ya,” deadpans Hewitt, channeling the down-and-out poetics of Lou Reed, David Berman, and Elliott Smith. First show of 2026 will be in the “gentleman’s duo” configuration with noted theorist Jake Sabinsky @jakesactualpersonalacct . Jake and I will be playing new songs from the next-next record that hasn’t even finished hitting “tape” yet. Rare chance to see this duo preview what I think is some of my best “writing” to date. Thanks to @andytnicholl for asking us to play at this, his release show - his record is a cleverly-wrought, tastily-fried collection of country-rock jams that I have a feeling will absolutely rip live.
