Two weeks ago I was clearing Mum’s house in SW London (we moved there when I was two) and was wondering what to do with the piano. What value does it now have, I thought, as the trip to the skip beckoned?
It was the piano that I cut my teeth on growing up, with my first compositional noodlings inspired by, among things, Thunderbirds incidental music, film music theme tunes such as “Un Homme et Une Femme”, and bossa nova records we had on the radiogram.
My first piano teacher at age 6, Tony Frankland, who lived on the other side of the Kingston Bypass, used to come over to teach me the basics – scales, arpeggios and early Grade exam pieces.
The sitting room doubled as Mum’s rehearsal room, where she would run through her songs with visiting accompanists so there would also be her guitars, an autoharp, some hand drums and eventually a reel-to-reel recorder. I would put records on the radiogram and try and play along, or try to figure out a tune that I’d heard on the radio.
The piano wasn’t tuned that often, so by the time I was at the Guildhall School of Music and having by then met Phil and Mark, who had each visited on occasion, the unisons were never really in unison, but that didn’t stop us from jamming – one time Mark was on my Eddie Ryan kit whilst I was trying to get equivalent volume out of the Barnes!
With all these memories in mind, I couldn’t let it be destroyed, so it’s now in a lockup awaiting it’s fate…
The @rhodes.piano has been the central part of my rig since my very first gigs with @level42official in 1980, and on all my solo gigs as well as with @dalataofficial and now, on the eve of my trio shows with @yolanda_charles_music and @johnsamdrummer it will once more be the centre of my expression as I play songs from #changes #changes2 #ontheone #level42 and more… Tickets are still available for @newmorningparis Dec 8th, @stablesmk Dec 9th, @pilgrimncl Dec 10th and I promise you an enjoyable and rewarding evening
🇬🇧Raising awareness through music at Newark College, Lincolnshire
2nd day of #16DaysOfActivism ✊🧡
As part of the workshop, fifty students wrote lyrics 🎶 about how to make their world a safer place. Mike Lindup - trustee of Becky’s Button and founding member of Level 42 - brought their words to life by setting them to music in the moment.

Really looking forward to bringing the band to @pilgrimncl on Wednesday 10 December! Joining me on stage are the incredible Yolanda Charles on bass and John Sam on drums. Hope to see you there.
