Incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to design 14 unique shoes for Clark’s Originals x Up There.
For this project I drew inspiration from the temple dogs inside UT’s Flinders Lane store. Those figures trace back to the protective totems of Melbourne’s Chinatown just around the corner. I wanted to run with the idea of protection and power, which led me towards other animals & objects that have a guarding and dangerous presence throughout lore. That’s where the abstract interpretations of dogs, dragons, spiders, and bats came in, all tied together in UT’s signature color palette.
Bringing the artwork to life took real craftsmanship. I spent the last few months working closely with Ant from Anthill Workshop in his space, and that slither in time is something I’ll always cherish. Watching a true craftsman at work was incredible. Using vintage chainstitching machines, Ant recreated each design stitch by stitch, drawing every image by hand with thread. The finished product wouldn’t be what it is without his expertise, - the texture, the character, everything pops and feels alive.
Once the embroidery was done, Chase Shiel stepped in to put everything back together, bringing his knowledge of bespoke shoemaking to the final build.
