In search of fertile soil we wandered a path which seemed straightforward, yet now it has started to deteriorate, leading to fallow ruins. Led astray into unknown lands, we found ourselves far away from the familiar path, lost in pitch dark forest. Not being able to define forms before our eyes, we become aware of all the potentiality that might be hidden in this darkness. It is incoherent noise, chaos, a microcosm of our awareness before language and material things. Stare into this grain long enough and you might for a moment see connections between points which create branching structures, you might see patterns, you might see figures, images, faces or creatures who also inhabit this forest. A constellation that led to a question that has never fully gone away: how do we come together? What brought us together did not naturally reside in the articulation of a conceptual ground, but in the attempts around it: sharing drinks, sharing food, returning, lingering. In those moments, time and space were at play, alongside the objects in the background, which, rather than remaining décor, began to behave more actively. A table, a tabletop grill, a crate of beer, a floor, a room. Gradually, they facilitated our being together more than the attempts related to words and ideas. We arrived at the notion that our common ground is not something to be revealed through language; it is something that sits in the structure itself, in the arrangement, in its technical aspects, and in the objects that facilitate our togetherness. In that sense, this exhibition is about what carries it, or what it carries. About what makes a situation possible before it fully declares itself. About all that is often overlooked as merely supporting, yet actually plays an active part in how something comes into being, how something interacts, how something converges, or does not. What comes together here does not fuse into a fixed whole. Rather, it takes shape through a series of attempts, approaches, and shifts. At times close to one another, at times passing alongside each other. What emerges, then, is not an answer to how one comes together, but a place in which that question remains present." Images of an empty furnace awaiting fire. Portable, it is rolled out, unfolded, hung up and set alight in places wishing to accomodate it, and the roar that comes when it is activated by ritual. It is transported from place to place like a travelling circus, searching for materia to dissolve and coagulate. Following hidden patterns of a white wall with ultramarine blue spraypaint. This mural emerged from an intuitive conversation with the wall, the wind, and the world around it. I allow the texture of the surface, the drift of the spray, the passing clouds, guide me. A local kid left a small drawing, which was woven into the larger pattern. A collaboration between my hand and the spirit of the moment. The artwork is a trace, the magic is in the process. Painted at Hof van Zuilenstein in Beverwaard, Rotterdam, for the 2025 @allcaps_rotterdam festival. Huge thanks to Daniël, Kat, Nanne, and the entire All Caps team for their incredible support.
