#tbt Digging through hard drives & found some of my old practice footage from around 2006.
This move is a variation of Swipes that I called โSwipe Hop Foot Tapsโ back then (catchy name ๐ฌ). At the time, it was my own original flip on a classic Power move*
Swipes for me were a way to combine the ideas of Style & Power.
I originally went for Style when I first started Breaking.
Being young, tall & lanky, Power moves seemed difficult & built for shorter, better coordinated kids. With Style though I could use my creative brain. In High School I would draw pictures & brainstorm every way I could think of to pose on a hand, elbow, forearm, head, shoulderโฆ What could I invent? How could I flip a move to make it my own?
That was my strategy/strength in my early battles. Many people were faster or more dynamic, but Iโd try to beat them with something different. It worked okay for a bit, until I got out into the larger scene and came up against people that had both Style & Power. Then I got smoked.
And after getting roasted a few times, I started to realize that all the variations and creativity in the world canโt overcome a lack of Substance. Style & creativity were a vital piece, but Power moves & dynamics were too. And if any of those pieces are missing, thats your weakness.
That was a big wake up call to train on my weaknesses. I worked on Power, strengthened freezes, sped up footwork, added flips & spins, and tried to move more dynamically.
That helped round me out as a Bboy, and led to larger events against better dancers. I never got great at Power moves, but I got enough to provide more Substance for my Style. They helped expand the tools I had available to then work my creativity with.
Swipes were one of my favorite Power moves to experiment with & this clip is a reminder to myself to be well rounded, work on your weaknesses even when you donโt want to, and have both Substance and Style.

*Looking back at it now, itโs got some similarities to a move Rawbzilla did around 2001. And maybe somebody did a similar move even before him. Either way, thereโs probably a 5 year old kid somewhere now that could do this move way better ๐
