Just finished and installed: A stair/guardrail project designed by @studio_rallymade and featuring oak trim by the very talented artisan of woodwork @stevenshermanwhite
I hope the mighty lion approves of the railings we recently made for the steps and walkway he’s guarding. Fun project.

This simple set of modern railings required some careful measurements and geometry calculations to line up nicely with matching slopes, plumb posts and level railings, given the steps and landing upon which they’re mounted have settled unevenly over the years. Turned out all right, I’d say.

Finally installed this railing I made a month-or-so ago, after having the powder coating redone a few times. Third time’s a charm. Fun to have a customer who wants something other than basic black (although…. nothing wrong with that).

Built-in custom fabricated bathroom shelves, wall end-cap, top-of-tile trim, backsplash… all powder coated satin black (along with the old electrical service panel). All for a cool mid-century modern ranch remodel in SW Portland.

Installed yesterday: Custom horizontal slat stair railings and guardrails. The design came about and was refined in collaboration with the customer. Fabrication took much more time than I’d estimated (as most projects do)... this one more than most. Oh... and don’t look too closely at the shiny fasteners... they’ll be replaced soon by custom color-matched powder coated fasteners. Loved this project. Similar one to come soon for a balcony on an apartment building.

Some jobs take weeks or months to build, while others merely a day or so. Here’s a fireplace screen done recently — some hours here and there of designing and planning and sourcing materials and getting the letters laser cut, but the build took only half a day or so, just in time to be presented unfinished to the new owner as a birthday gift (also a test-fit)... then returned to the shop for a few layers each of high heat primer and flat black high heat spray paint. Turned out OK. Surely a few minor flaws, but, as I tell my kids, “perfect is boring” (that, and the birthday boy is a fun and eccentric guy with a good sense of humor who’ll likely enjoy the whimsy in those flaws).

Last year I built some trellises for these containers, as the homeowner wanted to grow vegetables in them. They worked. She grew lots of veggies... which brought lots of rabbits. So... just finished installing some fancy rabbit-proofing.
Challenging project, as I had to deal with planters that were installed at a slant, and trellises (purposefully) installed at a slightly different angle, which made for lots of odd trapezoidal shapes to figure out for the new panels to not only fit right, but look good.
The original thought was to mount the panels so they can be lifted off easily for gardening access, and there was only one front panel to lift off. When I arrived to install them, the homeowner decided that the front panels were too heavy, and asked me to cut them all in half and make them each into two smaller panels. I suggested they get hinges... she agreed. So, back to the shop.
I finally got them done and installed yesterday. I enjoyed making the custom latches that not only keep the doors closed and aligned, and also enjoyed figuring out the little pegs-and-hooks way to get the side panels to stay on but lift off easily.
Given all the goofy angles, measurements, nothing being plumb/level, and the subsequent change order... well... I’m pretty happy how they turned out. (Although in hindsight, it might have been cheaper and/or faster to scrap the old containers and trellises and start from scratch...)

Finished installing this “mono stringer” stairway for a customer who lives on a bluff above a river. I’ve been working on it (off-and-on) for close to a year since the original napkin sketch. Very fun project and great customer.

It’s got legs! Finished building my new fixture/welding table, complete with DIY leveling feet: I drilled 1-1/8” holes through two layers of 3/8” plate, cut those into matching pairs of squares, then welded a piece of 1” pipe between them, then welded each into the bottom of my table legs — a simple plug weld at the top on each side, and welded all the way around the bottom. I ground and sanded them smooth, then welded leveling feet — each a 9” piece of 1” threaded rod, with a bit extra welded onto the ends. I welded a big ass nut onto the bottom of each leg (and a plate to the top, which is bolted to the table).
Big, flat and level. I’m excited to put it to use.
Phase 2 of this project will include caster wheels mounted on hinged plates, which will raise and lower using a captive scissors jack (one at each end of the table). Not sure how soon I’ll get to that, as I have a pile of customer projects to get done first. Nice to have this new addition to the shop, though.
I’m building a 4’ x 8’ laser cut tab-n-slot fixture/welding table for the shop. The process: 30 minutes clamping shit together, followed by 2 minutes of welding, then 10 minutes of unclamping. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Tedious... but oh it’s so flat! Table top is done. Now time to build the frame and legs with leveling feet and some kind of scissors-jacked caster wheels. More to come. Can’t wait to put it all to use!
Finished a couple of months ago, but yesterday was installation day. Not quite done — still to have a wood top/cap rail on top of the guardrail section. The guardrail and handrail are separate pieces, bolted together on top of the guardrail — the transition will be hidden by the wood cap rail. Fun project .
