The baton has been passed! We are thrilled to announce that Valeria Espinal (they/them) has officially stepped into the role of President of the CoCA Board of Directors. Val has been our Research Director, a member artist, curator, supporter of our organization and board of directors and brings a wealth of passion for artistic research. We couldnโ€™t be more excited to have their vision and energy leading us into this next chapter. We look forward to seeing you all at the gallery soon!

Our smallest, incredibly unique images in the exhibit come from Val, who also landed us our first sale to benefit ReWA. Their work fuses the world of nature, science and art through a queer ecology lens, and we absolutely love the ways these imaginative images evoke movement, play and celebration in their stillness and framed curiosity. We are also wholeheartedly celebrating Val's new position as the next President of CoCA (Center on Contemporary Art) and can't wait to see what they bring to this new chapter in the Seattle art scene. ARTISTS GIVE BACK is on view at Labour Temple through May 1st, and online through our bio link. Valeria โ€œValโ€ Espinal (they/them) is a non-binary, Honduran-American self-taught mixed media artist based in Seattle, WA. Their work has been shown in local galleries such as The Vestibule, The Fishbowl and Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA). The multitudinous forms of life and art is the lens through which Val navigates their identity as a transgender human, a fusion of queer ecology. Val affectionately refers to their pieces as a kind of "stained glass". Their pieces at the microscopic scale uncover the hidden life of paint as a medium, reveling in different angles of texture and transparency. At the macroscopic level, their work brings the human world and the microbial world together on a different style of picture plane. Using micro-photography, painting, and collage, Valโ€™s work experiments with the boundaries of art while giving microscopy a new field of study.

I Remember For Trans Day of Remembrance, Iโ€™m returning to one of the most important moments of this year. The T4T group show at The Factory brought me to my knees in thanks. Many of these photos were taken by viewers, and I love seeing what spoke to people in my work. I remember and I stay alive ๐Ÿ’œ
