Growing up on Staten Island, I wished there was a salon full of emos blasting MCR and stylists that werenโt afraid of cutting layers too short. Every salon I entered, I felt like I didnโt belong.
Hair is personal. Itโs art. Itโs political. Itโs what you wear everyday. A certain haircut or color can define your whole aesthetic. Iโve never felt like I can be myself more than ever than at our space. I wanted to create that place that I so desperately searched for when I was a kid. A place where the misfits or black sheep of their family could come, and feel safe. The kids who have anxiety in large places. A place that people like me would look forward to going to and walk out feeling like I could take on the world.
I think teenage me would be proud.
