@west52ndstreetfilms
Inspired by director Michael Borrelli’s real-life relationship with #byronbray , an #lgbtq elder he met in recovery, The Last Day of Byron Bay gives us an intimate, human glimpse into a profound, intergenerational, queer friendship with a story and perspective rarely seen on screen.
Unfolding over one last late-night conversation, The Last Day of Byron Bray is a deeply personal, homegrown #newyorkstory about memory, mortality, and what matters most in the end. 🏳️🌈
We are counting down the days to the world premiere on April 11 & 14th at the @floridafilmfest 🥂🍾

Hoyte van Hoytema
Career highlight for me to direct 2nd unit on set in Prague with legendary DP, Hoyte van Hoytema,
the brilliant cinematographer responsible for some of the most potent images in cinema .
Beyond his immense talent, he is kind, focused and generous. Leading a huge team of over 30 people with a calm and steady hand. His crew pushes themselves beyond expectation, not out of fear of messing up, but out of love of the process, massive respect for the director, and admiration for such a warm hearted luminary. He’s so stealth when executing his craft, you almost forget you’re in the presence of greatness. Hoyte obliterates the mad genius archetype and shatters the idea that you have to be chaotic and ruthless to create visionary art. Kindness is the answer here…
So grateful to the masterful @adrianseery for his time and care with our film.
Our World Premiere @floridafilmfest is less than 10 days away!

Working with the great William Sadler is a miraculous process. He transformed into a much older version of himself right before my eyes. He took pieces of his own life, and alchemized me and Byron’s story into something we can feel while watching the film. His life experience has led him to this precipice..a brilliant contradiction of being ancient and brand new all at the same time. Not one ounce of him is jaded.. generous and kind to all on set. It has been the honor of a lifetime to direct this film.

The Last Day of Byron Bray
Legendary character actor William Sadler delivers a moving performance as an elderly gay man who senses his approaching death and spends one final night sharing hard-earned wisdom with his young friend. Featuring music from M83 and Japandroids, the film explores universal questions about dignity at the end of life, sobriety, and the power of chosen family.
Inspired by real events in New York City, the story is drawn from writer-director Michael Borrelli’s own relationship with Byron Bray, an LGBTQ+ elder he met in recovery when Byron was 80 and he was 30. As Byron reached the final chapter of his life at 92, their bond evolved into a profound intergenerational queer friendship, capturing a perspective rarely seen on screen and reflecting the lived reality of many LGBTQ+ elders who spent much of their lives in the margins.
Shot on Super 16mm and unfolding over one final late-night conversation, The Last Day of Byron Bray is a deeply personal, homegrown New York story about memory, mortality, and the people who stay beside us at the end.
