We shot this PSA for @votelocal.us a few weeks ago urging people to VOTE. Not for the big ticket items, but for the things that actually affect all of us on a daily basis, the little stuff less spoken about, with the ultimate goal of getting people to engage in civics outside of the binary party system and re-instill faith in Democracy.
In a time of so much division and political polarity this feels like a message worth spreading.

Back in May 2019 a good friend recommended me to filmmakers Natalie Rae @natalieraerobison and Michael “Cambio” Fernandez @cambio_was_here who were in the midst of making a documentary about a fatherhood program in a Washington, D.C. jail that brings incarcerated fathers and their daughters together for a special Daddy Daughter dance.
A day or two later I traveled to DC for what was to be an emotional experience that I am so grateful to have been given.
I was brought on to shoot for the day leading up to the dance, and alongside Cambio for the dance itself. I started with some of the girls the day before the dance preparing at a local beauty salon and at one of the girl’s homes, as she tried on her new outfit for the first time. The following day I started at the prison shooting the fathers as they got dressed, trading their prison attire for suits and ties, while Cambio was with the girls. We then came together with the fathers as they eagerly and nervously waited for their daughters to meet them. Some were meeting for the first time, and for others it might be the only time they will be able to touch or hug each other during their long sentences. To be a firsthand witness to this moment was incredible.
Cambio and I shot the dance in tandem. We both wore easy rigs, shot with SR3’s and pulled our own focus. Our loader must have loaded 40-50 rolls of film that day.
I feel very lucky to have been a small part of what is an incredibly powerful and important film, “Daughters” which is now on Netflix. Thank you to Natalie and Cambio for giving me the opportunity. I am in awe of what you’ve made.
