“The Great Degradation” was made in a frenzy. Possibly inside of a trauma response, I’m still working that out.
But I woke up today and was able to hear the songs with fresh ears for the very first time since they were recorded in a 48 hour artistic anxiety driven moment back in October of last year.
I don’t have the emotional capacity for pride, but I am able to tell when I’m working at the height of my current abilities, and that’s all I ask of myself while making anything. And that’s what we did.
There is no hiding in these songs.
No pretense. No aim for anything other than an honest representation of where our ideas and lives were at inside of this exhausting moment in history.
These songs are not for everyone. They are not made to be played or sung in arenas or stadiums or heard at restaurants by passive listeners. These songs are intimate and sincere snapshots of lives lived in the United States of America during The Great Degradation.
There is healing in the naming of our fears. There is power in the collective acknowledgment of the extreme pressure we are all experiencing (whether we want to admit it or not).
@vanessajeanspeckman and I are bringing these songs out and into the world LIVE starting Tuesday in Detroit, Michigan.
Maybe give the record a spin today. Buy a ticket to a show. Make a plan to meet us where we’re at and we will do the same for you.
Sincerely, possibly to a fault.

The “Stick & Bindle Version”, a stripped to the bones re-recording of @vanessajeanspeckman and I’s record “The Great Degradation”, is out now over on both of our respective Bandcamp pages.
Included as a special bonus track is our duo version of the song “Let The Boys Be Girls” featuring Vanessa’s now famous piano horn.
We are a sling shot in the back pocket of the people. A thumb in the eye of the grifters and charlatans currently parading as royalty.

On December 1st of last year, @vanessajeanspeckman and I drove down to San Luis Obispo, CA and spent a day at @slofirecording with our friend Patrick Hayes at the board. We re-recorded all of the songs from “The Great Degradation” with just the two of us and an acoustic guitar.
We’re calling it the “Stick & Bindle Version” and it’ll be available at midnight tonight over on our respective bandcamp sites for Pay What You Want.
This is a chance to hear the songs as they were written. Enemy Of The State and 2P4P were wound back and recorded as the John Prine songs they already were.
Growing up playing John’s Schnabel’s acoustic guitars, a song was never going to be considered worth a damn if you couldn’t play it unplugged in the living room. To this day my favorite songs tend to be able to stand on their own two feet no matter the number of outlets available.
V and I kick off our tour May 12th in Detroit, Michigan and we would love to see you out in the world. Thank you for listening and we’ll see you soon!

Save the date for May 24th!! So excited to host @vanessajeanspeckman & @micahschnabel on tour with support from these wonderful songwriters in the round at Kitty Castle :)
Stoked and honored that @vanessajeanspeckman and I will be playing the @nickalexandermt stage at @frankturner ‘s @losteveningsfest IX in Dallas, TX on September 24th!
It’s never lost on us how fortunate we are to get to perform in front of the beautiful and supportive community Frank and crew have built. We promise to wear our nice church shoes and Vanessa won’t even say that F word that much. I mean, a little. But not like a whole lot.
“Enemy Of The State” is the third track off of @vanessajeanspeckman and I’s new record “The Great Degradation”. Available now on all streaming platforms!
Vanessa’s wearing our new @lowlvl designed Serfin’ USA tee, featuring Punchy riding a wave of delusion out of the nuclear blast zone. You can grab one for yourself over at Vanessa’s Bandcamp site (link in stories).
We’re putting the finishing touches on our new Micah & Vanessa Jean chatbot, so be sure to leave a comment so we can try it out!
