Connected. From the creation force of Mauna Kea’s volcanic peaks to the crystal springs and salmon spawning grounds of Mt. Shasta to the ancestral resting place of the Lisjan shell mounds of West Berkeley and beyond… We have been connected through the tides of life + death and protected by our reverence for All-family for generations. KŪKULU is a symbol of these connections. 🔺🔺🔺 KŪKULU :: a traveling exhibition of art, education, & ceremony serving to inspire the community to stand as pillars for sacred Mauna Kea and celebrate it’s protectors of ancestral connection to sacred places. • The KŪKULU exhibit opened in West Berkeley on Friday, bridging Lisjan Ohlone with Mauna Kea. These are some photos from this beautiful gathering. I feel blessed by the shared fullness of spirit, heart, & community KŪKULU represents & to carry a spark of this flame from Mauna Kea family. • This is 1 of 10 sister exhibits which have passed through places like Kohala, UC Davis, Redding, & New York. All KŪKULU exhibits are projects of @maunakeaeducationandawareness held with local community. This Berkeley exhibit was coordinated by @niriaalicia & @kaanak_lisyan with support from @corrina_gould , @chiefcaleen , @savetheshellmounds , @villages_of_lisjan , @run4salmon , @sheridanoelani & many more... • • • #kukulu #Maunakea #run4salmon #protectshellmounds

Nature loves Complexity. By nature, with nature, we create & complexify.  We are busy, busy Beaver People. It seems there is always something to tend to, to grow, to create. It is also the Nature of the universe to grow and complexify where there is space and the building blocks for creation. We are children of Nature, made of the same matter as this planet & everything animate on it, so naturally we feel the same impulses and rhythms of life too… • What we create & tend to with our attention, however, is what matters most. • Our seasons are changing. To adapt and move with our changing environment, we must stay connected to the music of it all. Mother Nature has so much to teach us inside & out when we stay connected in sync. • • • {“Nature Loves Complexity” blog in bio link} Photos: Carolyn, Rachael, & Ali weaving willow during an intertribal TEK river restoration day at East Sand Slough. #beaverpeople #weaving #seasonsoflife #naturalintelligence #natureiscomplex #synchronicity #ecology #tek #itek #rematriation #californiaopenlands

The 58th Annual Selma March 2023 remembers Bloody Sunday: March 7, 1965…  Recent images were taken during the documentary film project “Freedom Road”, currently in progress. 1 - The 58th Annual Selma bridge march. March 7, 2023. 2 - Bettie Mae Fikes, Freedom Singer since age 15, here leading the opening of the Jubilee with powerful song.  3 - Bettie Mae Fikes recalling the songs of freedom and hope which gave people strength to face the violence of racism together. 4 - “I wake up in the morning & I know that I’m standing in my purpose.” -Terri Sewell, Dem. rep for Alabama’s 7th district before welcoming President Joe Biden. 5 - Sax player Dietrich Lawson filling the air with a soulful feeling. 6 - 1965 Selma march. The bridge was named after Edmund Pettus, a politician, lawyer, KKK Grand Dragon Wizard, senior Confederate Army general, and US Senator. Named in 1940, it commemorates his leadership in campaigns against African Americans’ rights. 7 -  March 9, 1965. Front line walking from Selma to Montgomery. 36-yr-old Dr. & Mrs. Martin Luther King, best friends Dr. & Mrs. Ralph David Abernathy (with their children Donzaleigh, Ralph David, and Juandalynn), and John Lewis. (Name of priest unknown.) 8 - Marchers kneeling to pray when stopped by state troopers. 9 - "Two Minute Warning”. Moments before the AL state troopers beat marchers. 25-yr-old John Lewis here leading the march. There was little media coverage of the brutality of the first march, as media people were the first people attacked and their cameras broken. 10 - March 25, 1965. A crowd of 25,000 arrive to the Alabama state capitol after a 54 mile trek from Selma (the third attempt) to present a voting rights petition to Gov. George Wallace.

“Freedom Road” is the story of the unsung heroes of the Civil Rights Movement.  Through the voices of the everyday men and women who put their lives on the line in a war for freedom, we remember the power of the people united. .
