Introducing Dancer @jennymilani Jenny is a grounding force in this work—ethereal and ever-flowing, a fluid powerhouse. Here is what Jenny has to say about Glitter & Doom: “Most of my early training and performance experience was in classical ballet. With many ballets, there is often a clear chronological story that is being told through pantomime and dance. The theatricality involved to relay a story without words helped lay the groundwork for the type of theatricality needed in this project. This work requires full commitment to the bit and to be unapologetically loud and, at times, outrageous (mostly in the 2nd act). There is a moment in the piece where the whole cast is on stage having an “end of the world” dance party together. This part always feels very special, because we get to have a very human moment together and can really feel the strong connection between us all. Working with the other dancers has been such a joy, and those moments of connection on stage is what I truly love most in this piece. This piece brings up real issues that our communities are currently facing. Being able to navigate these heavy topics has served as an important processing tool for me. I am grateful for Halley for not shying away from bringing these subjects to the forefront of the piece, and for my fellow cast mates for creating a safe and supportive environment to explore them within.” Scottsdale Performing Arts Center, Virginia G. Here is what he has to say about the work: “Being a part of this immersive work has pushed me to deepen my understanding of the subtle, layered ways we communicate through the body. It’s the kind of process that keeps asking more of you, constantly inviting reflection on the future as a way of navigating the present. As performers, we’re not just embodying movement, we’re choosing to believe in the possibility of something better, and that belief becomes one of the most meaningful parts of the journey. Introducing Dancer @lay_uh_ What a force! In this work Leah is strong, nuanced and quite funny! Here is what Leah has to say about Glitter & Doom and the process: “Not only does this work blend with my background in theatre and improv comedy (and of course dance), but it also speaks to themes I think about in my life as a PhD student. In my research, I study how communities support each other and resist today’s landscape of surveillance technologies, so Glitter and Doom speaks my language in many ways. It’s been fun to bring a sci-fi futuristic piece to life through movement. For the last few years, I’ve been not only performing in but also creating more dance theatre pieces. It’s been exciting to learn from Halley’s creative process - I would say that being a part of an evening-length dance theatre work has emboldened me to try new things in the pieces I create as well, and I find myself increasingly turning to more speaking, character building, and campy ideas. Introducing dancer @james.lantz He has been with this project since the beginning and here is what he has to say about it! “Growing up doing musical theatre and then studying contemporary/ modern dance in college was probably the perfect blend of experience to have before entering into this project. Playing with a character while also utilizing that type of movement vocabulary in this process has been tapping into truly every part of me as a performer! In making this dance we pulled from a few different pieces of material for this project but one of my favorites was a collection of SciFi books that were brought into rehearsal very early on in the process. We were able to read through some of them and pick out moments and dialogue that stood out to us. A lot of these influenced what we say and how we move in this project. Through this work I learned more than ever how important it is to place trust in the people you are performing with. From complicated movement, difficult lifts, and ensemble thinking, this work really challenges us in the best way to work together. Glitter & Doom is truly a journey, for the viewer and the performer. We have really been given such a unique opportunity within this piece to find the highest of highs and lowest of lows. There are so many comedic and serious moments that tap into so many different emotions; with the underlying theme of the work being something so relevant to what is happening in real life. It’s a privilege to bring it to life, but at the same time, it’s also a good reminder that what’s happening in the world is serious, and what we do now has a direct impact on the future.” Scottsdale Performing Arts Center, Virginia G. Introducing JP Alejandro, dancer in GITTER & DOOM! @movesbyjp is a Phoenix-based dance artist, educator, and community-engaged practitioner originally from the Bay Area. He holds an MFA in Dance from Arizona State University with a Certification in Community-Engaged Practices in Design and the Arts, and a BS in Dance from the University of Wisconsin–Madison as a First Wave Scholar. JP’s creative work centers Filipinx American identity, memory, and embodiment, investigating how personal and collective histories live within the body. His choreographic and performance projects blend dance theater, storytelling, and spatial design to cultivate connection, critical reflection, and deep listening. He has performed works by Li Chiao-Ping, Raissa Simpson, Gerald Casel, and Michael Foley. Alongside his artistic practice, JP is deeply committed to dance education and wellness. He currently teaches at Mesa Community College and collaborates with senior communities and diverse populations to create movement experiences that are accessible, affirming, and culturally grounded.
