New one for Willamette Week: I wrote about Burger Syndicate, the new Ankeny Alley smash burger shop from Anthony and Stephanie Brown of @nacheauxpdx .
This one is very much a story about place: a downtown alley after dark, the neighbouring clubs, hotels, and even @voodoo_donut surrounding a new burger joint hoping to fully ensconce itself in that lively late-night scene. But it’s also a story in which the Browns’ particular brand of maximalism — cheese-skirt burgers, loaded fries, bottled lemonades, gloves with every order, and a wall timer that gets you a free burger if you hammer the big red button at exactly at five seconds.
Nacheaux has always been loud, saucy and eye-catching. Burger Syndicate takes that same raison d'être and tightens its focus to burgers, fries and even deep-fried ravioli until 2:30 a.m. in Ankeny Alley.
Alex’s birria wontons got the full Service Lens treatment at Baka Umai.
Housemade beef quesabirria wontons, Oaxacan cheese, birria spice, consommé, cabbage, cilantro, onion, and lime. Crispy edges, deep, rich broth, slow pull, deep dunk.
These specials are made in very small batches. Blink, and you'll miss them. This ramen shop is especially unique due to one-off dishes like these.
Shot for @baka.umai with @darth.gastrameny and @ramentayosei . This one was built for the lens.
Crispy. Golden. Addictively good. ✨
Our Crispy tofu is lightly fried until perfectly crunchy, then served with fresh veggies and a savory house dipping sauce. Simple, comforting, and full of flavor. 🌱🥢

So this weekend we had some issues with running out of a few items by Sunday evening.
With the economy the way it is and everything so unstable it is hard to predict how busy we will be these days. One day we’re a ghost town the next day we are cranking.
We know all too well that the cost of living is out of control and we are trying our best to buy enough products to not run out but also not overspend and sit on product we are not selling…it’s a really hard balance these days!!!!
If you were affected by us running out of a few things we apologize for the inconvenience and are very thankful for your patience!!
If you’re in the industry you know very well the balance we have to work harder than ever for and it is truly exhausting sometimes.
We just keep moving forward in hopes that the city and country will get to a better place soon!!
Much love to y’all, many thanks for the support and we hope to see ya soon🙏🏽💥

@steelys_pdx opens on Hawthorne with smash burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, beet dishes (both sandwich and salad) and a bologna sandwich made with bologna crafted in-house, plus a 20 tap beer, wine, and cider list alongside straightforward, affordable cocktails.
It's taken over the old Gigantic “blue cube,” now repainted and reworked to suit a more stay-a-while feel.
My latest for @eaterpdx .
Perfect day for some catfish…but really everyday is a perfect day to get in on some deliciousness 🔥🔥
We’re back at it today and need your support friends! Business has been slow for everyone these days and we know budgets are tight!
If you spend money with us just know you are supporting a small business that cares and employees who live and love what they do❤️
We appreciate you and your support for the last 19 years and hope to keep going through these uncertain times with the support from our community!!
Love y’all!!
Marcus

Machetes’ move into the Hey Love kitchen inside the Jupiter NEXT hotel is more than a pop-up finding a home. I dug into the structure behind the residency and what arrangements like this might say about Portland’s cooling hospitality market.
Also pictured: El Trompo Del Diablo, the late-night al pastor spinoff that’s already spinning outside Hey Love, expected to ramp up once the warmer weather is upon us.
Scenes from the Tap Season kickoff in the Tualatin Valley with local beer, full tables, and a surprise appearance from the alpacas at Hillsboro Downtown Station.
