This past summer was filled with lots of opportunities to dance and educate, and he is just one of those glimmering stars in the sky of artistry. I created this work on an amazing group of middle schoolers, and I’m so thankful that they were able to get this choreography in a whopping six days. Special shout out to @thiessence & @caroline_voultepsis for assisting in that vision, and also my fabulous high school counterpart @ms_purpledancer and ballet choreographer for the group @iamcourtneyrenee .

I’ve been a part of the making of this production since 2018 and it was one of those things that I thought would never happen. So I just got this news last night and I’m still processing it. Rest In Peace to a man who helped shaped me as an artist. He is the reason I can say I’ve danced on international stages…plural! Even returning to Europe the next year, I’d hear him saying all these good things about me, and the self-depreciation would have me calling him senile. But to see him smile and say “Baby Boy” when I’d walk in a room was the only feeling of celebrity I’d need. Thank you Ismael Ivo! COVID is still claiming people I care about!

So I was supposed to post this like 2 weeks ago. My kids had to write an argumentative essay on “Is Black Dance an integral component of dance in America,” and let’s just say I got some “All Dance Matters” type answers. So this was my little...”Da Hell U Mean” response. Forgive my pronunciation of Evita. Making, editing, recording, conceptualizing, and facilitating lessons through videos was not in my contract, alas I am a Black educator and my babies deserve it. (Even though I’m doing it for free and at 2am).

I haven’t spent the holidays with the family in a while, but I would always call and talk about what I was cooking, what I was trying to cook, and what I was missing out on with my mom. I’m not sure how I’m going to feel today, or even these next series of holidays, but I’m taking the first steps. I miss my momster but I wish everyone the happiest holidays with their loved ones. It took me a couple tries to write this, and no combination of words will ever match the way I’m truly feeling. But here’s to trying...Rest Easy Mom!
