How do you stay in the eye of the storm ? When everything around you is swirling, the systems are expiring, fear and division are being kicked up into the air, distraction and destruction the objective of our government. Stay close to the things that allow you to remember who you are, why you’re here, why you’re happy to be alive. Community, creativity, all things informed by love.
This was one of the first pieces of jewelry I made in 2011. Growing up as a first gen Iranian girl in Los Angeles trying to figure out where i belonged, who I was and where I felt seen - from a young age I found myself collecting gems like this speech given by Rev Jesse Jackson. They would become integral to my growth and sense of self and serve as forever inspiration. Thank you Rev. Jackson for bringing me one step closer. We are all somebody.

In the writings of Baha-u-llah, he shares that Black people are like the pupil of eye, surrounded by a sea of white, but it is only the pupil that contains the vision. The term “I see you” has never felt better than coming from a Black person. I hope it is humbly accepted as I reflect it back. I see you, I love you, the landscape of this nation and this world without you and your contributions would be a world I simply would not want to be a part of. Happy Black History Month❤️
Months ago when we were working on the album artwork for @flea333 - he grabbed this photo of my mom and her pet pigeon that’s framed in our home and knew it was how he wanted this body of work to be shared with the world. This photo coming out now in light of what’s happening is Iran makes me weepy. It was taken years before she and my family would have to escape Iran with nothing, becoming refugees in their own homeland. Moving to America and starting from scratch, literally. The only things she was able to bring with her were a handful of photo albums which I cherish- this photo being amongst them. Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the government targeted members of my religious Faith in particular. Bahais were and have been heavily persecuted - after the revolution persecution became systematic, state-sponsored, and institutionalized, resulting in staggering numbers of official executions. I was born in Los Angeles in 1980- growing up with the acute awareness that at any moment members of my family that were unable to escape could be killed at any time. Late night secret phone calls from my grandmother made on untraceable calling cards. My cousins not being allowed basic things like access to an education in a school or the right to make a living. 10 year old me writing letters to every sitting US President highlighting the lists of human rights violations. Now, more than ever- I feel like I’m deeply in a state of powerlessness over mass scale corruption. Not just in Iran & the US, but all over the world in varying degrees. If it’s not in Iran, is it different if this kind of thing takes place on different soil? I’m not sure what the best course forward is, I wish I did. It is my prayer that we, the people don’t allow any system to divide us into us and them thinking. It’s just us and In my belief system “The Earth is but ONE country and mankind its citizens”. - Baha-u-llah
This is my best friend @julieburnswalker she just wrote a book and its the best purchase you can possibly make in this moment. Her voice will comfort you, her words will make you feel wonder and awe.
