Gillian & Shamil’s wedding at Hotel Wailea started with a private vow exchange under the mango trees and ended with a big exit up the staircase and a getaway car just like old times. They enjoyed a beautiful ceremony on the Sunset Lawn (angled toward the mountains, which is my favourite) and some Indian wedding traditions as well as a quick trip to the beach before the party. The last couple of months have been pretty wet here in the Aloha state, but weddings like Riki and Chris’s remind me of how beautiful rainy day weddings often are. The colours are soft and the greens are rich, and I personally find umbrellas charming. The day began with an absolute downpour, but the main lobby of @gatheronmaui served as a lovely ceremony and reception space with high ceilings and a light lovely palette. Not a bad plan B at all. We even made it to the beach. Congrats to @riki__c and @chris.przybylski !

Congratulations to Camey & Craig - this wedding was such a stunning combination of elements and locations. The ceremony was held on the upper portion of the golf course of @gathermauiweddingsevents - I have not shot at this particular spot in many years, but it’s a gem and gave me the chance to get a few drone shots showing off its south Maui location, with dramatic clouds and rain falling over Molokini as a backdrop. Hotel Wailea was as lovely as ever for a reception and portrait venue. It is possible to have a gorgeous Hawaii wedding without hitting the beach. I also shot a few rolls of film. Stay tuned! I’ll try to ship them off tomorrow - I moved house the day after this wedding so I’m feeling pleased to have delivered the digitals not too long after.

Here you can see my first drone shots from a wedding. Fun story: After shooting portraits at sunset out on the jetty, we were walking in and it struck me that I wasn’t schlepping my drone back with me. Turns out I had left it in the sky! Thankfully Tom @remfilmshawaii had heard it beeping its low battery warning while I was absorbed in land-based photography. He kindly landed it and packed it up for me, with only 5% battery remaining. Thank you Tom! I’m happy there were whales and even a rainbow for this cool group of Canadians early in the month, when conditions were standard-issue Maui wonderful.

February has been very stormy on Maui’s north shore, where I live. Valentine’s day was focused on a kid with the flu (my shot seems to be saving me so far) and fallen bamboo and mud. Lots of mud with some heavy duty yard work. I’m updating my systems, moving to a new computer and trying some new recipes during this darker, slower month, and I came across this shoot from eight years ago, now, on a cold wintery day in Florence. There’s no red or pink in it, but some vintage lace and romance, I think.
