Meet violinist Ani Kavafian, who will be joining us this summer to teach a masterclass as one of our amazing Guest Artists!
Born in Istanbul, Turkey, of Armenian heritage, Kavafian began studying violin with Ara Zerounian and eventually with Mischa Mischakoff. She went on to study violin at the Juilliard School and Meadowmount with Ivan Galamian.
Professor of Violin at the Yale School of Music, Ms. Kavafian tours internationally as an artist-member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and appears frequently in performance with her sister, violinist and violist Ida Kavafian, who is also a Meadowmount alum.

Today marks the 95th birthday of renowned violin teacher and beloved Meadowmount faculty member Sally Thomas.
Ms. Thomas taught violin at Meadowmount from 1960 and over 6 decades served as Principal Assistant to Ivan Galamian, Co-Director and the administrator of student life, and Vice-President of the Meadowmount Board of Directors. She was devoted to Meadowmount and its ideals, and has been greatly missed by her students and the Meadowmount community since her passing in 2024.
A Meadowmount alum herself, Ms. Thomas remained active until 2021, saying, “There is really nothing more rewarding than helping someone grow and develop.”

We can’t wait to welcome cellist Ralph Kirshbaum to our campus this summer as a guest artist!
Renowned for his pedagogy, Kirshbaum served on the faculty of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester for 38 years. In 2008, he accepted the Gregor Piatigorsky Chair in Violoncello at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, where he served as Chair of the Strings Department from 2016 to 2022. In July of 2016, Kirshbaum received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. He is Founder/Honorary President of the Pierre Fournier Award, as well as Honorary President of the London Cello Society, and continues to serve as Artistic Advisor of IMS Prussia Cove.
Mr. Kirshbaum will be giving masterclasses in cello and chamber music on our campus this summer.

Meet violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, who will be joining us this summer as a guest artist!
A graduate of the Curtis Institute and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, Ms. Pajaro-van de Stadt was the founding violist of the twice-Grammy-nominated Dover Quartet. Her numerous awards include First Prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and top prizes at the Sphinx Competition and the Tokyo International Viola Competition. Ms. Pajaro-van de Stadt is now a member of the newly formed piano quartet “Espressivo!” along with acclaimed artists Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson, and Anna Polonsky.

Meet Ann Setzer, one of our wonderful violin faculty!
Ms. Setzer is currently on the faculties of the Julliard School Pre-College Division, the Mannes College of Music and is an Artist Faculty member at the Third Street Music School in New York City.
A Meadowmount alum, Ms. Setzer is one of the most respected and beloved violin teachers in the world today. She has been associated with Meadowmount since she first attended as a student, and has been teaching on our campus for 45 years.

We are thrilled to welcome legendary violinist Arnold Steinhardt to our campus this summer as a guest artist!
A Meadowmount alum, Arnold Steinhardt has been the first violinist of the internationally acclaimed Guarneri String Quartet for its entire forty-five year career. He has been a Professor of Violin at the University of Maryland, Rutgers University, the Colburn School, Bard College, and presently the Curtis Institute of Music. In his youth, Mr. Steinhardt studied with Meadowmount’s founder, Ivan Galamian, as well as longtime chamber music faculty Josef Gingold!

Meet the Isidore Quartet, who will join us at Meadowmount this summer as guest artists!
Winners of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the New York City-based Isidore String Quartet was formed in 2019 with a vision to revisit, rediscover, and reinvigorate the repertory. Two members of Isidore are Meadowmount alums- Joshua McClendon (cello) and Phoenix Avalon (violin)!

Meet Caroline Coade, one of our fabulous viola faculty! Professor Coade is currently Associate Professor of Viola at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, as well as the 3rd chair violist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. A San Diego native, she holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory, The Curtis Institute of Music, and The Juilliard School.
