@kronos_quartet returned to Carnegie Hall for “Three Bones,” a semi-staged, multisensory exploration of the histories of Indigenous, Gullah-Geechee, and Chinese American communities in the United States.
The musical triptych began with samples of Native music first recorded in 1890 up to contemporary Native compositions and new arrangements, featuring the visceral and poignant artistry of violinist-composer @ortwoman .
The second panel highlighted connections between Western African and American cultures nearly lost to history, centering on Lorenzo Dow Turner’s “Amelia’s Song” and a world premiere by Charlton Singleton with Grammy-winning percussionist Quentin E. Baxter.
Pipa virtuoso @wu_man2019 joined in the triptych’s final panel, featuring new music by Dai Wei, personal histories of Chinese Americans who expanded civil and immigrant rights in San Francisco, and more. 📸: Stephanie Berger
#tinydesk • The rejuvenated band @kronos_quartet , sporting three new members, is having more fun than ever. And it shows in these vigorous performances of pieces that are whimsical and socially conscious. 🐸

We’ve had the honor of collaborating with our dear friend and legendary pipa player Wu Man for over 30 years, so it was only natural that she joined us onstage for the World and West Coast Premieres of our latest project, Three Bones🦴🦴🦴
@wu_man2019 is featured in the third part of the Three Bones triptych, “Beyond the Golden Gate,” where together we played selections from Tan Dun’s Ghost Opera as well as “Two Chinese Paintings,” the piece that we commissioned her to write for us as part of Kronos Fifty for the Future✨🎶

꩜ THREE BONES ꩜
This project has been years in the making, and we couldn’t have been more excited to share it with the world this past Saturday at Carnegie Hall!
Three Bones got its title from a conversation with poet (and Kronos friend!) Nikky Finney on the importance of listening: Three tiny bones in our ears amplify faint vibrations from the outside world, transmitting them to our minds. Three Bones celebrates the transmission and amplification of cultural histories through sound, as captured in vintage recordings and brought to life via performance👂
We are so incredibly grateful to have such amazing collaborators- Three Bones was possible because of each of you. We can’t wait for the West Coast premiere on Saturday- We’ll see you there!🦴🦴🦴♥️🩵

Earlier this month, we collaborated with Palestinian-American visual artist Samia Halaby on a special presentation at @sfmoma , creating live, brand-new compositions by musically responding to her kinetic digital paintings.
An educator, writer, activist, and pioneer in the worlds of abstract and digital art, @samiahalaby coded her “Kinetic Painting Program” in the early 1990s in the computing language C, turning her keyboard into a live painting instrument through which she can manipulate colors and movement as vibrant abstractions that shift, collide, and dissolve across the digital projection.
You can learn more about Samia and her work at samiahalaby.com

Today, we remember legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away yesterday.
From David Harrington: “Asha will always be one of my most favorite musicians. She was the Queen of Bollywood film soundtrack singers having recorded more than 12,000 songs in 20 languages. We made an album together in 2005 called ‘You’ve Stolen My Heart’: Music of RD Burman on @nonesuchrecords . Kronos had so much fun doing this together with Asha, Zakir Hussain and @wu_man2019 . Everyone involved took on all sorts of new roles and Kronos hasn’t looked back. One of her last recordings was in June 2025 for our ‘Hard Rain’ recording with @eliaeinhorn ‘s @redhotorg where she sang a verse of Bob Dylan’s song with her granddaughter Zanai pointing to the peril we are all in 80 years after the first nuclear detonation. Asha’s voice was for billions of people the most recognized voice of India. I’ve often thought that statistically Asha is likely the most famous musician in the world and was one of the kindest I’ve ever met. All of Kronos send our thoughts to Asha’s family.”
