I had to head over to Evergreen College again to interview my homie @mctate2 . On one level it was a high level dialogue with a historian, and on another level it was just two bros shootin' the shit. Only he could have brought things back full circle, reminding us that breakdancing (and popping & locking) had appeared in the Olympics before, but in the 80s! Warning: these clips may bring on feelings of intense nostalgia.
The New York City Breakers crew may not have been in LA at the opening ceremony but in '84 they did declare breaking should be an Olympic sport.
Anyways I'm glad Jay said what he said, cause it got people talking and concerned about the current state of hiphop. That being said, I wonder if @lionelrichie has anything to say about @jayz declaring breakdancing dead just cause it's an Olympic sport. In fact, share this post and send it to Lionel Richie (and tag him) so we can figure out what he would say! I wonder if Jay even knew breaking was performed at the Olympics opening ceremony at LA in 1984. I barely remembered myself, and based on the fact that he incorrectly named the 4 elements of hiphop, I'm going to guess his hiphop knowledge isn't extensive enough to know that. I think he also accidentally used the word rap synonymously with hiphop.
BTW, imagine you become a billionaire off rap, then forget the MC is one of the 4 Hiphop elements 😂💀
