MCIC loves to read 📚🌱 do you? This month, we’re highlighting thoughtful reads (in English and French) from our 2026 Reading Lists that explore youth action, resilience, and creating change in our communities. For adult readers, Essential Work, Disposable Workers by @mhenaway is featured on our Reading List for Global Citizens. It explores systems of inequality and challenges us to think critically about labour, migration, and justice. For students in Grades 4–6, Little by Little: You Can Change the World by @sonya_ballantyne , @raysdrawlings and Toben Racicot is featured on our Reading List for Global Students. It follows a young person learning to speak up and challenge misinformation in their community. These stories highlight how change often begins with small actions, courage, and a willingness to question the world around us. Find these book lists and other classroom resources on our website – link in the bio. #GlobalCitizenship #YouthAction #GlobalStudents #GlobalCitizens #SocialJustice #ManitobaEducators #ReadingForChange #bookrec

We cut out the negativity this week at @winnipegsd "Taking care of the planet and each other" event! Climate anxiety is a heavy burden and sometimes we may feel powerless. So, to craft some positivity, we brought our Art for Climate Action workshop! 🎨 Students visualized the future they want to see and created their own postcard with bold imagery. Together we wrote a message to the Premier, asking for care and consideration for the planet when making decisions. You can read the final messages on photos 1 and 4. 💚 Thanks to all the students for your hard work! And special shout out to our awesome intern from @sevenoaksmetschool who helped out. #climateaction #sustainability #ecoanxiety #artforaction #art #collage #manitobaeducation #manitobateachers @sargentparkwsd @climatemanitoba

Having strong support at home can make it easier for children to stay connected to school and continue learning. In rural Ethiopia, about 70 youth received education scholarships along with tutoring, health care, and daily hot meals. These programs create more stability at home and make it easier for young people to continue their education. For Yohanna Kassahay and her family, the Love & Hope Center has become an important part of daily life. “There are various advantages for our family. It minimizes our family expenses,” shares Netsanet, Yohanna’s mother. “I especially like the clothing program and the different clubs. Tutorial, hygiene, and daily hot meal are my favorites.” This project is supported by @real.humanitarian in partnership with local communities. The experience shared by Netsanet reflects how these programs can reduce financial pressure on families while creating a more stable environment for children to learn and grow. May 5 is Red Dress Day. It is a day to remember and honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people, and to stand in solidarity with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. Red dresses hung in public spaces are powerful symbols. Each one represents a life that was taken too soon, someone who was loved, and families who continue to carry that loss. As the day approaches, take a moment to learn and reflect. Hang a red dress in your yard or window. Take a walk and notice the red dresses in your neighbourhood, and think about what they represent. There are also community events happening tomorrow: - @amcmbchiefs Red Dress Day Memorial Walk and Ceremony starts at 10:00 am at the Winnipeg Law Courts (408 York Ave), walking together to Oodena Celebration Circle at The Forks. - 6th Annual MMIWG2S+ Walk for Justice at 5:30 pm. The event will begin with a gathering at Oodena Celebration Circle, followed by a walk to Memorial Provincial Park. You can also visit the Red Dress Exhibit at @humanrights.ca or learn more through @scoincmb . Find full event details and ways to get involved on our website - link in the bio Photo credit: @humanrights.ca #RedDressDay #MMIWG2S #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousLivesMatter #Winnipeg #Treaty1Territory

As the school year moves into its final stretch, it’s a busy time but also a chance to reflect on what you’ve learned and keep building on it. 🌱✨ To our educators, thank you for creating spaces where students can explore ideas and take meaningful action. To our students, this is a great moment to keep building on your Take Action Projects and see how far your ideas can go. If you’ve been part of a Take Action Project in your Global Issues (40S) class, we would love to hear about it. You can apply for MCIC’s Outstanding Take Action Award if it feels like a good fit.✨ DM us for the application or check the link in bio. Need some inspiration? Check out the 2025 projects: 1. Owen Coomber and Emerson McFadyen engaged students in a mock election to explore youth voting and civic awareness. 🗳️ 2. Juliana Nicolas created The Butterfly Project, supporting teen mental health through social media and exam care packages.💛 Let us know how you’re taking action for a more sustainable and just world. #winnipeg #manitoba #manitobaeducation #takeaction #takeactionproject #globalcitizen #globalcitizenship #sustainability #sdgs

It’s World Book and Copyright Day 🌎📚 A day all about the power of books, and how they open windows to new worlds, people, cultures, and ideas. So we thought, what better time to share some of the books we’ve been reading and recommending at MCIC? Here are a few thoughtful reads (in English and French) from our 2026 Reading Lists that explore sustainability, climate justice, and our relationship with the Earth. ✨ For adult readers, The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by @robinwallkimmerer is featured on our Reading List for Global Citizens. Drawing on Indigenous knowledge, it invites us to rethink what we value and how we live in relationship with the natural world. For students in Grades 7–9, Climate Is Just the Start by @mikaelaloach is featured on our Reading List for Global Students. It connects climate action to justice, kindness, and global movements, encouraging young people to think critically and take action. Find our book lists and other classroom resources on our website and link in the bio. These books remind us that caring for the planet is also about justice, responsibility, and the future we are building together. If you had to pick one to read first, which would it be? 📖✨ #EarthDay #ClimateAction #GlobalStudents #GlobalCitizens #Sustainability #ManitobaEducators #ReadingForChange #bookrec

Hey friends, happy Earth Day 🌍 This week is also #FashionRevolutionWeek, a global movement asking us to think about who made our clothes and how they impact the planet. The fashion industry has a big impact on people and the planet. Every year, millions of clothes end up in landfills. But small actions can make a difference, like mending what we already have or getting creative with it. ✂️✨ Can you keep your T-shirts out of the dump? That’s the question behind our Fast Fashion T-shirt board game. We created it in partnership with @reclaimmending . Our game sparks conversations about everyday fashion choices and helps players discover small, positive ways they can take action. You can check it out on our website (link in bio). We’ve just ordered new sets and they’re on their way. ✨ We’re also working on a French version of the game. If you’re interested in bringing it to your classroom, organization, or event, DM us. 📩 Remember, the most sustainable clothing is what you already own. How do you get creative with mending or reusing your clothes? Let us know in the comments below. 👇 #EarthDay #FashionRevolutionWeek #SustainableFashion #SlowFashion #EthicalFashion #ClothingWaste #TextileWaste #CircularFashion #MendDontTrash #WearWhatYouHave #ConsciousConsumption #SustainableLiving

When @ocicofficial kicked off their 2026 Symposium, we were asked to name an intention. Our goal was to stay positive ✨ Our world feels heavy and challenging right now. There are many global issues, conflicts and war. Around the world, international funding has been cut. But by coming together, finding community, making space for hope and positivity, we can make a difference. Our friends at OCIC did just that! Thank you to all the event organizers, the speakers and facilitators, the volunteers and all the other participants! 💛 Photos 1 and 2 by OCIC. @icn_rcc @acgc_now
