“Waves are such a great mystery, especially for an artist to draw. A wave has no edges. Whatever it does, it does far away from where you can really see it. We think the water is rushing towards us. Actually the action is quite different. Everything is rushing towards us and the water takes on the shape of that energy but actually any particular spot is mostly going up and down. It’s paradoxical—it ain’t what you see. You can’t be sure what you’re looking at. And yet it’s also a force that has no respect whatsoever for your opinion. “The question of scale: how you interpret something, how big it is, this is very important to a work. What does it evoke in you, the relationship to you? In Tenth Wave I hint at crowds in those little lines at the base. You sense those crowds fleeing, but I don’t give you the opportunity to compare the waves with the situation. (smiling) Hokusai made some mistakes, putting people in. By comparison that wave would be... only two or three times bigger than people. With people as a measure, you associate the wave with a different kind of scale.” —June Wayne. In this free flowing space, art is grouped around four bodies of water: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Oceans, and the Mediterranean Sea, this configuration highlighting the architect’s unique perspective. Growing up in Chicago observing Lake Michigan, Wayne was fascinated from a young age by the power and unpredictability of water. If you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, MONUMENTS, featuring Hugh Mangum, is in its final days at The Geffen Contemporary at @moca , with free admission through May 3. We are proud to represent, in collaboration with @acagalleries , the special edition of Hugh Mangum prints Where We Find Ourselves curated by Margaret Sartor @wherewefindourselves and Alex Harris @ourstrangenewland . In addition to the Mangum’s photographs, MONUMENTS gathers Confederate memorial statues erected after the Civil War, now removed, in dialogue with contemporary work commenting on a tragic era of American history. Dana Montlack, Sea of Tondos series, Lambda Print on Aluminum. All works created between 2013 and 2017. Atlanta based artist @danamontlack has long explored the natural world. Inspired by the marine life and ecosystems of the ocean and John Steinbeck’s “The Log from the Sea of Cortez” (1951), Montlack’s circular Sea of Tondos are a collection of photographic collages. Montlack focuses here on microscopic and oceanic imagery, reflecting the relationship between our perception and the mysterious underlying reality. She has a long history of collaboration with the scientific community, and has been an artist in residence at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego @mcasandiego , and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography @scripps_ocean . Her “Ocean Tunnel” reached a large audience as part of a @burningman traveling exhibition and her art has been widely shown in solo and group shows, including in Dubai and at @josephbellowsgallery in La Jolla.
