Yesterday, 11-year-old Mazel Alegado became the Philippines’ champion at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand by winning the women’s park finals in extreme skateboarding. She just edged out compatriot and fellow 11 year old Elizabeth Amador, who clinched silver. She is the 13th gold medalist from the country at this year’s SEAG.
According to Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham Tolentino, this also makes Alegado the youngest Filipino SEAG gold medalist in history. Two years ago, she was also the youngest Philippine representative at the 2023 Asian Games.
The young skateboarder was featured in 2024 in Vogue Philippines’ portfolio of athletes and Olympic hopefuls. In her interview then, she explained the maturity and tenacity it takes to thrive in her sport. “Sometimes in my head when I get frustrated, I just move on to another trick and then come back to it,” she told Vogue.
