Ja ho deia sa padrina que ho veia tot. Una gran matriarca, cuidadora, amb un gran sentit de l’humor. A les cultures mediterrànies la matriarca és qui sosté l’estructura emocional, domèstica i sovint l’econòmica de la família. La pèrdua de les padrines — i de tota la xarxa que sustenten generacions— no és només emocional, sinó que també es perd una forma d’habitar l’espai i relacionar-nos. Quan no hi són, la casa esdevé un actiu immobiliari i la meva generació es queda sense un lloc on tornar o arrelar-se. Aquest projecte és un acte de resistència a l’oblit i a les conseqüències de la gentrificació. - Grandma used to say she saw everything. A great matriarch, a caregiver, with a sharp sense of humor. In Mediterranean cultures, the matriarch is the one who sustains the emotional, domestic, and often financial fabric of the family. The loss of our grandmothers — and the entire support system they built over generations — is not only emotional; it also marks the disappearance of a way of inhabiting space and relationships. Empieza con la figura de mi abuela, una matriarca que sostuvo la vida doméstica, los lazos familiares y el tejido del barrio. Tras su muerte, la casa quedó expuesta a la especulación inmobiliaria, lo que finalmente condujo a su venta y demolición. Esta historia personal atraviesa un proceso de colonialismo contemporáneo que impregna todo el territorio de las Islas Baleares, diseñado durante décadas para convertir los barrios en oportunidades de inversión. Este modelo desplaza a los residentes, incrementa los precios de la vivienda y dificulta la continuidad generacional. Granada, 6-12 octubre 2025. Gracias @pa_ta_ta_festival por darme la oportunidad de presentar mi proyecto cuando todavía estaba en fase de investigación — experimentación. Un auténtico lujo hacerlo en plena Fuente de las Batallas, con los vecinos del barrio y junto con otros grandes profesionales. La ciudad en la que estudié y viví durante cuatro años ahora se enfrenta a la gentrificación. Pero Granada es y será siempre de su gente. 🫀 Gracias también a Maria y Cecilio y todo el equipo del festival por hacernos sentir en casa. Y gracias también a mi familia de Cádiz por venir a apoyarme. 🤍

❤️‍🩹✊🏽 Dissabte 4 d’abril a les 19 h ‘ELEGIA PER A UNA CASA’ Un projecte de Maya Valencia Aquest assaig fotogràfic aborda la impossibilitat contemporània de protegir la llar. Parteix de la figura de la meva padrina, una matriarca que va sostenir la vida domèstica, els vincles familiars i el teixit veïnal, i de com, després de la seva mort, la casa va quedar exposada a l’especulació immobiliària que finalment va conduir a la seva venda i enderroc. El projecte situa aquesta història personal dins un procés més ampli: un colonialisme contemporani que travessa tot el territori de les Illes Balears, dissenyat durant dècades per convertir els barris en oportunitats d’inversió. Aquest model desplaça els residents, tensiona el preu de l’habitatge i dificulta qualsevol continuïtat generacional. ✒️ @maya.valee

I’m still processing everything I experienced this past July at Cortona On The Move 2025. I feel super excited that my project Ca Sa Padrina— Letter to my Grandmother's House is exhibited alongside artists I admire. The theme “Come Together” couldn’t be more accurate or more necessary for the times we’re living in. Reconciling and healing require courage, resilience, and strength as human beings. A very special thank you to @paolowoods for the curatorship, the vision, and the support throughout the whole process and to the entire @cortonaonthemove team: @veronica_nicolardi , the @kublaiklan collective, and all the volunteers. You all make this festival such a close, caring, and deeply human experience. Many thanks as well to the @iebalearics and to Karen for all the support. Discover the exhibitions of Cortona On The Move 2025, from July 17 to November 2 in Cortona: ‌ 📌 Ca Sa Padrina – Letter to my Grandmother’s House, by @maya.valee In collaboration with @iebalearics ‌ Ca Sa Padrina revolves around the final farewell of Maya Valencia to the family home located in the Son Espanyolet neighborhood in Palma, on Mallorca. In this house her grandparents lived their entire lives. Following their deaths, she has been trying to navigate the grief of these losses and of the house. ‌ In fact, in Mallorca more and more foreign investors seek to buy properties, convert them into vacation rentals, or sell them to foreigners. This practice turns into a collective pain over an urban transformation that forces lifelong residents to leave. Me fa molta il·lusió dir que m'han seleccionat el projecte de fotografia "Ca Sa Padrina" des de l'@iebalearics per exposar al Festival Internacional de Fotografia de @cortonaonthemove que se celebra a la Toscana italiana. Ca Sa Padrina gira en torn al meu darrer adéu a la casa familiar situada al barri de Son Espanyolet de Palma, a Mallorca. En aquesta casa els meus padrins van viure tota la vida. Després de les seves morts, he estat intentant navegar el dol de les seves pèrdues i de la casa. A Mallorca, cada vegada més inversors estrangers cerquen comprar propietats per convertir-les en lloguers vacacionals o vendre-les. Es tracta d'un dol col·lectiu d'una transformació urbana que força als residents de tota la vida a marxar. L'habitatge s'ha convertit en un luxe. Aquest projecte és un acte de resistència contra l'oblit i les conseqüències de la gentrificació. A través de la fotografia me reconcilio amb aquest espai i utilitzo la imatge com a prova de que aquesta casa la vàrem viure, la vàrem estimar i, per tant, importa. Agraeixo molt a l'Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics el suport i el finançament del projecte. És un honor representar a les Illes Balears a Cortona On The Move 2025, aixi com també agraeixo el suport de Paolo Woods, el director artístic del festival, i tot l'equip que ho està fent possible. 17-20 Jul és l'inauguració de l'exposició a Cortona, Itàlia. Me sent super afortunada d'haver fert l'Erasmus en foto al Vilnius Academy of Arts. Lituània és un lloc especial. Allà cuiden cada racó: es cuiden entre ells, cuiden els seu idioma, cuiden els carrers, cuiden el disseny, cuiden la tipografia, cuiden lo públic, cuiden l'esperit revolucionari, cuiden els arbres i els boscos, cuiden l'art, cuiden les tradicions, cuiden el paissatge. I tot això per sobre l'individualisme i l'obsessió de fer més diners que provoca el capitalisme. Tenim molt a aprendre d'ells. És un lloc especial, amb una gent que ho ha passat malament i ha sofrit molt durant tota la seva història. Però ara es cuiden entre ells i sobreviuen. Vaig tornar al 2024 i segueix tot igual. There they take care of every corner: they take care of each other, they take care of their language, they take care of the streets, they take care of the design, they take care of the typography, they take care of the public, they take care of the revolutionary spirit, they take care of the trees and the woods, they take care of the art, they take care of the traditions, they take care of the landscape. And all of this over and above the individualism and obsession with making more money that capitalism provokes. We have a lot to learn from them. It is a special place, with people who had a hard time and suffered a lot throughout their history. But now they look after each other and survive.
