No matter our life paths, the colour of our skin, or the food we enjoy on our tables, most of us share an ordinary, radical wish: we want to live in communities where every life can flourish.
But today, reactionary governments are poisoning the ground we share. They treat LGBTQIA+ people as scapegoats for their authoritarian projects and write exclusion into law.
And yet, we are part of a shared story. Time and again, our communities have joined forces with other movements and sowed the seeds of change for a better future.
Across the world, IDAHOBIT is unfolding: events, gatherings, private acts of care.
That is part of what it means to be at the heart of democracy: every life, free to bloom.

⚠️ Content note: LGBTQ+ rights, discrimination and hate crime.
Today is IDAHOBIT.
The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
It marks the day homosexuality was removed from the World Health Organization’s list of mental illnesses in 1990. But it is also a reminder that LGBTQ+ people across the world still face hostility, discrimination and violence simply for existing.
A decade ago, the UK ranked 1st in Europe for LGBTQ+ rights. Today, it ranks 22nd.
The latest Home Office figures also recorded more than 18,000 sexual orientation hate crimes and over 3,800 trans-related hate crimes in England and Wales.
Hate thrives when communities are divided.
Pride exists because people refused to stay silent in the face of discrimination, hostility and exclusion.
At Chichester Pride, our 2026 theme is Unity. Because this is not the moment for division, silence or complacency.
We stand together in hope, solidarity and strength. 🌈

Being against bigotry is not the end, it’s barely even the start.
For IDAHOBIT this year, we want to highlight that the fight against hate, requires centering the wellbeing and protection of the most marginalised.
Trans and queer caribbean people have always existed in our region as stewards of land, as artists, and as creators.
We are always opening and clearing the pathways to safety for ourselves because we know better than anyone what we need.
joining us in this fight requires resourcing us and allowing us to lead. because the pathways we open are not just for us as queer and trans afrocaribbean people, but for EVERYONE who calls the caribbean home
at the sugarcane collective, we’re greatful for the two islands that held our house this dry season, and for the oceans that facilitate our continued connection across all islands 🫱🏾🫲🏽🇹🇹

Today, May 17, is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). According to @may17org , this year's theme is "At the heart of democracy," serving as a reminder that "truly democratic societies must be grounded in justice and freedom for everyone."
In Canada, nearly four in ten 2SLGBTQIA+ folks have experienced violence on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression in the past five years, compared to their non-queer counterparts.
A democracy worth its name has to show up at the scale of the street, sidewalk, park, transit station, or plaza, where the daily test of belonging plays out. WiUC reaffirms its commitment to building cities where everyone can walk freely, gather openly, and exist without fear. It's not a side project of democracy but democracy itself in practice.
Read more on the fight for inclusion and representation in cities at www.WomenInUrbanism.ca/words or #LinkInBio.
Let's show up for everyone in the community! 🫂

17.05.
Internationaler Tag gegen Homo-, Bi-, Inter- und Transfeindlichkeit (International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia)
#Vielfaltleben (Motto Queernet RLP)
#ImHerzenDerDemokratie (internationales Motto)
Krankheiten der WHO erinnert.

Discrimination has real consequences. LGBTQ+ young people don’t face higher suicide risk because of who they are. They face higher risk because of how they are treated, stigmatized, excluded, and targeted.
From rejection after coming out, to anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, to bullying, harassment, isolation, and shame…these experiences impact mental health in real and measurable ways.
Support matters, too. Our research consistently shows that acceptance and belonging can help protect LGBTQ+ young people from suicide risk. The ability for young people to live openly and authentically is built by supportive families, inclusive schools, protective policies, safe communities, and trusted adults.
These factors save lives. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
This International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, we’re reminding LGBTQ+ young people: You deserve safety, joy, support, and a beautiful future.
Support is not passive. It’s something we choose to practice, actively, every day.
If you or someone you know needs support, The Trevor Project is here 24/7/365. Call 1-866-488-7386, text ‘START’ to 678-678, or visit trvr.org/Help to connect with a counselor, free and secure. 🧡

May 17 marks the day in 1990 the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses. The fact that this anniversary still needs a global day to recognize it is 💔 for many. The fact that for the first time in years, the number of countries criminalizing same-sex relationships is rising again.
This year’s theme is “At the Heart of Democracy” and that is not a coincidence.
When governments roll back LGBTQIA+ rights, they are not just attacking one community. They are testing the strength of the entire democracy. Authoritarianism always starts by deciding which people get to fully exist. LGBTQIA+ people. Immigrants. Women. The list grows. So does the silence.
I refuse the silence. This house, this account, this woman stands for person who has been told they are too much to be loved.💙
Things you can do today:
Donate to The Trevor Project. Trans Lifeline. GLAAD. Email your reps about active anti-LGBTQIA+ bills. Fly a flag where your neighbors can see it. Tell the queer kid in your life, by name, that you love them.
Being who you are should never be a crime. Anywhere. Ever. 🌊

É a discriminação.
