Saturnalia
Dir. Daniel Lerch
Where to Watch: Prime rent or purchase (US), awaiting UK release
Saturnalia is an independent feature with bold storytelling, depraved characters and a stylistic approach that could be a comparative film for 1977’s Suspiria. Filled with striking cinematography, and sequences reminiscent of a dream state, it’s easy to see how these comparisons can be drawn. We also have a luscious score by Claudio Simonetti (Dario Argento’s long-time composer whose work can be found in Suspiria, Demons and Opera); their first in nearly a decade!
The colour palette is divine, drawing me into an Italian Giallo inspired world. Our protagonist Miriam (Sophia Anthony) is rebellious, headstrong and defiant, a perfect companion for the academy’s headmistress Ms. Hemlock (Velvet), who harbours a dark personal secret and seeks any opportunity to make Miriam’s life a living hell.
Saturnalia has some interesting themes; coming-of-age, abuse of power, occultism. All of which collide into a dramatic final sequence. The casting was great, with each role providing purpose and driving the story to a new level of mystery. It’s also bringing these stories we all love into a modern age, providing an air of fun to the proceedings without too much gore or extreme violence.
This is clearly a love letter to much beloved titles from the 1970’s, from the plot to the visual and auditory choices. There’s enough passion behind the storytelling and execution to intrigue fans of independent cinema, whilst bringing a new audience into the world of Giallo filmmaking.
I'd like to thank the team at Terror Films for sharing this screener with me.
