At a time when big tech, social media, and mass media companies are increasingly consolidating power and the flow of information into the hands of a few unsavory biIIionaires,
and are assisting increasingly authoritarian governments at home and abroad to put profit for those in power ahead of the will and well-being of the people,
we find it more important than ever to find some balance, to meet offline, to build systems of community and exchange out from under the view and control of these insane companies and in full presence of one another.
The Nervous System is an ongoing screening series of experimental short films and projects that we’ve been organizing and hosting periodically since 2008 - sharing thoughtful, challenging, inspiring works made by and enjoyed by folks in our own community.
Filmmakers are in attendance when possible, and the format gives everyone a chance to hang before and after the screenings to meet, engage, ask questions, and share some thoughts.
This (we hope) pushes us to connect more directly with one another, inspire shifts in our collective ways of seeing, and helps us imagine alternate systems of community and mutual exchange.
We love our online community too, especially for the ability it gives us to connect with people across the world, but there’s nothing like sitting with friends and neighbors in a dark room together sharing ideas, an endeavor that can have repercussions far reaching.
