I've been feeling a little stuck in a rut playing wise the last few weeks, but I liked this little snippet of improv I snuck in between students the other day.
Trying to find new things to work on and practice which has been helping me to feel more inspired. I really like what I settled into here. It sounds different and I'm happy with how present and into it I am.
Always more to work on.
Love what I do.

Trying to find more time to practice behind my actual kit instead of relying on the practice kits at work when I'm teaching. It's been a bad habit recently that I need to change.
I really enjoyed improvising and messing around with the reverse rack tom setup that's very much in vogue right now. @8020drummer did a recent video on the subject which really inspired me to give it a shot. Some fun little phrases and ideas in this clip.
Even when I don't touch them for a while these Starclassic's sound so damn good.
Love what I do.

Happy birthday to my partner, my best friend, my love, my person, Cordles, Mama Goose, Cordie-D, Cody, Big Blinkin', and finally, Cordelia.
Cordelia is kind, funny, creative, beautiful, smart, and she kiiiiiinda knows how to sing (like really really good). She works so hard to celebrate and uplift others, she really deserves to be celebrated today.
Happy birthday Cordelia. I love you.
Thank you for being you.
This was a wacky click to groove to for a bit.
Nice little bits of phrasing in this clip too.
Happy with my level of practice recently.
Love what I do.

Back with some more drum nonsense for y'all.
40bpm. 2 bars on beat, 2 bars on the &.
This was my first little improv/warmup before teaching today. Just getting the brain and hands moving.
As always, lots of moments and concepts in here that could be cleaned up a bit. However, I am extremely pleased with the moments I'm proud of. There are some shapes and ideas in here directly showing up from what I've been practicing. I'm also so happy with the moments of flow in this clip where my limbs and brain are working together and true expression happens. I included in this cljp the laughter and joy I had after a really nice state of flow. Discovery, learning, and improvement at the instrument should be joyful.
Truly love what I do.

6 years.
6 years of laughing till I cry almost every night.
6 years of admiring how you make every room you walk in better by simply being there.
6 years of being a team. We're a great team and I love working together to figure out whatever life throws at us.
6 years of looking across the room/the bed/the stage at you and wondering how on earth I got to be so lucky.
6 years of sharing music, laughs, frustrations, Penny, and much more.
6 years of loving every note you sing.
6 years of you being home.
6 years of you being my person.
Happy Anniversary, Cordelia.
I love you.
I haven't posted any drum nonsense in a minute.
This is a short snippet from a bit of soloing I got in between students this past week. I've been doing a lot of constructive practicing this past week and wanted to push myself in this solo to phrase a bit differently than I normally do, all while remaining expressive and true to my voice.
Some definite successes in that goal in this clip and definitely some things I can improve on. Always room to grow and improve.
Love what I do.

This is a post about gratitude.
At the end of my VHS of Disney's Tarzan, there was a music video of Phil Collins singing, and playing one of the many amazing tunes on that movie's beloved soundtrack. In my memory he's playing on a big red drumset in a studio while the song is playing. I thought it looked SO cool, and after showing my mom the video, she very eagerly introduced me to Genesis. Drum lessons happened shortly after that, and 26 years later here I am sitting in YVR about to fly to New Zealand because of this silly instrument.
I have been so fortunate this year. Some of my favourite records I've ever played on came out, I toured across Germany, Gander Jam continues to grow and build community and I had a wonderful year teaching my students...I feel lucky to be where I'm at in this point of my career.
And so, if you have ever asked me to play your music, if we've ever shared a stage, if you've ever come to a show or a jam, if you've ever bought a record...from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I am eternally grateful for the support and the privilege to play music with great people. I truly love what I do.
I also need to thank my unbelievably supportive partner, Cordelia. I have become ever busier with my drumming over the past year and she has never stopped supporting and encouraging me to take every opportunity I can. She's simply the best. I'm lucky to face all the craziness of my life and career with her. Thanks, qt.
Happy Holidays everybody.
Just some nonsense chops between students the other day.
Click at 50bpm. Two bars on the downbeat, two bars on the &'s.
I liked my phrasing in some of these breaks. Felt nice to let myself do this kind of improvising again.
Love what I do.

Here's the last little bit of my drum solo at Hatim's show at The Fox last night!
Lots of fun stuff in here that I'm quite happy with. Drum solos at a pop show are always a bit of a balancing act of trying to stay expressive and in the moment, while also trying to play stuff that will excite and interest the crowd. Lots of silly little chops that I've been practicing showing up too! Those little sweeps from the rack tom, to the snare, and then to the hats have been showing up in my practice a bunch.
Happy with where this one landed.
Love what I do.
Oh, and a big thanks to @keithsinclairmusic for capturing this. He's amazing at guitar and filming me.

Another clip with Space Elevator from our album release show last Friday.
This is the last two minutes of a newer song for us, "sjall."
This is the third Space Elevator tune with a drum solo battle between Eliot and myself. Mike loves taking advantage of having two drummers in the band.
Despite how new this tune is to us, I thought we crushed it at the show. The epic, beautiful ending is quintessential Space Elevator.
Love what I do.
